Question about Bose Companion 3 Computer Speakers

1 Answer

Bose companion 3

Hi, my companion 3 speakers have stopped working i.e. when connected and turned on only a hissing noise comes out of the speakers and a random, sudden base noise from the sub-woofer, have tried different input leads, sources and power outlets, are they simply broken? Cheers

I was listening to a song on youtube, and when I exited out the song kept playing, so I figured it would stop playing after the song was done, but it kept repeating. So I accidentally disconnected/disabled the speakers, trying to get it to stop and I thought it was temperary but now I can't figure out how to reconnect them.

I'm having the same issue. My sister has the Companion and her boyfriend was being dumb and reset it somehow. Now, I am here trying to fix it and I can't figure any of this out. She has a mac and it is recognizing the Bose. It just isn't letting me choose to use it as my default sound. I tried the 800 number and of course they're closed on Sundays..

This is a common problem it seems with the electronics within the speaker set. (Companion 3 with sub and remote pod, aka, 'puck' = help desk support term)
I bought the multimedia speaker set in 2004 and had it replaced in 2005 because the 'puck' would not turn on (no orange light nor green light.) So I called help desk and they accepted the warranty exchange and I mailed the entire system (speakers and all) back to Bose in Markham, Ontario, Canada and they sent it back several weeks later. It worked 5-6 years after that as it is 2009 now, and it has the same problem again (no light on the puck). So I called help desk again and was ran through the same tests again (on/off, power plug off, various audio inputs, etc.) and the guy said to mail it in and they'd fix it as a non-warranty item. Cost: $85(Cdn) for repair + taxes, and $39 for remote pod.
So the sound that I got to enjoy from the Companion 3 system was amazing but electronic quality is very poor. For a set that cost above most other home user sets at FS and BB, it is substandard longevity.
I like Bose and have no complaints about the sound, but I will not buy another Bose multimedia package because at $350 (in 2004), I would expect it to outlast other sets. My friend bought a Logitech speaker set from another company in 2003 and is laughing at me as he realizes this is my second set and it hasn't even lasted as long as his own set.

Hello,

I have had totally the same problem before, and I have discovered that it is actually because of the electric current running through the speakers when the volume is low or muted.

I am afraid to tell you that the only solution to this problem is to raise the volume, as it is not a malfunction in the speakers but in the electric current running through them.

Good luck.

The right speaker on my Bose Companion 3 works for a while then just stops working. I haven't changed anything on my computer setup. I checked and the plugs are inserted tightly.

Can you hear anything from it right now, such as scratching noise or something, if you can hear something, then check the audio input cables, or the output to the right speaker, try turning it or something.
If that method didn't works, then possibly there's two conditions:
1. Your right speakers burned, try replacing it with the new ones.
2. Your power board half damaged, the right channel is damaged or something.Maybe the IC's burned or maybe just some minor electronics parts that is not working properly.
