If you have experience with TVs, then you can open the back cover and check the voltages from the power supply to the other circuitry. If the video is missing more likely a Y sustain board might be defective. If you find one of the fuses blown on that board; please post the assembly number to see if that can be fix to the component level.

Having 20 years experience swapping boards at sears should be good enough to know more or less what is wrong with your plasma and not pay for assistance.

A few more details would be more helpful. Whats the model number? And what exactly do you mean by no menu display?

Right. It looks like Y-sustain board or the PS board problem. Difficult to tell without testing the set. Usually the Z board goes bad soon after the Y-board. So you might have to replace them both. Remember there's no such thing as an instant solution... Rate the expert who helped you get close to the problem.

    Thanks,

TRY FIRST UNPLUGGING THE POWER CORD FOR TEN OR TWENTY MINUTES.

In the meanwhile give me more details on your problem, it is not clear.

Do you get channel picture?

Is tv on standby?

Is just the remote not working?

You need to get a technician testing your TV, I told you.

You need somebody that can read voltages and test components working on your TV without destroying it.

The problem is probably the PSU, try powering off the set, if light stays red instead of green it is either the PSU or one of the two sustain boards.

    Both components should be tested.

    See the service manual here
    and have fan.

Unless you find an easy repair, with a faulty cap on PSU board, or a blown fuse on Ysus , Zsus, and you have a solid background in servicing electronics and TVs, take the unit to a repair shop and have it fixed.

  • Ginko
    Ginko Dec 03, 2008

Now I do not want to seem rude, but you do not fix a tv the way you think.

This is not a desktop PC were you replace a $20 PCI card and fix a problem.
You need to test components inside , and some of the test is dangerous for your TV and for your safety.

On a plasma TV you have high voltage running, and you can get heavy discharges even when TV is unplugged.

Before damaging the TV , or wasting few hundreds dollars on the wrong board I suggest you calling the number listed on the owner manual and asking the cost of a warranty extension, or a repair.

The TV is relatively new, and a warranty extension, if available will be less expensive than a single repair and will cover your TV for one extra year or longer.

    Regards.

One last hint, some of the guys anwering you, like the one that said

"the problem which u stated is due to the faulty capacitor or ic on the
board that needs to be replaced by checking on the board that which 1
is faulty.also it could be because of the small fuse of the tv gone
dim.or loosing its power.as u said u get the green power on the front
led this says that fuse is not blown off completely."

Do not have any technical knowledge, the guy is an user, surely with less knowledge then you, and is just posting his thoughts, the answer did not make any sense.

Call the phone number first, if you want to do it yourself, and the led turns green , then it is usually PSU, Y sus or Zsus, all components must be tested before replacing.

If you DIY dont attempt testing voltages, just test fuses and resistors for continuity and inspect components on power board.
This is more than enough for a newbie.

  • Ginko
    Ginko Dec 03, 2008

Well if you are a tv tech, then the problem is fixed, test the power caps on the PSU, test the voltages and the fuse on the two sustain boards,

All you need is the service manual here .

On the service manual you find how to test Ysus and Zsus

less than one hour and the job is done.

You can find replacement parts here.

I am sorry sir , but your point is not clear here, you knew what the problem was , and you ask me just to know if " if you all guys know what you all are doing or only taking people money and say you all solve the problem "

And your conclusion must be that by telling you what the fault is, and wasting my personal time , "I am taking people money".

That is rude and abusive sir, I charge a lot of money to fix a plasma TV. I cannot understand how you can afford to come here, waste your and our time, and end up insulting everybody.

I told you that some (and I mean some) comment is from users with no technical background, they are supposed to be tech support.

You have at least three electronic answering you and wasting time on your little joke.

I am sorry sir but we have better things to do, all the support and the solution is on this thread, you should be entitled to no refund in my view.

Goodbye, and enjoy the service manual that on the market is worth $25 or so.

Can the service menu for the LG 52sz8d dlp tv be accessed from the orig remote not the service remote just installed new lamp and tv was working fine for 1 week now the lamp indicator light comes on and...

Hi there,

One possible solution to access the service menu on LG tv's is as follows with steps 1 - 4:

1. With the TV on, press and hold the MENU button on the TV front panel.
2. While holding that button, press and hold the MENU button on your remote.
3. Hold both buttons for ~5 seconds until the service menu comes up on the TV.
4. Release the remote MENU button first, then the TV MENU button.
If you are looking to reset the lamp indicator then continue with the following steps 5 - 11:

5. Press and hold the ENTER (or OK) button on the TV front panel.
6. While holding that button, press and hold the MUTE button on the remote.
7. Hold both buttons until the Lamp Life Hours show up on your TV screen.
8. Release the MUTE button first, then the ENTER button on the TV front panel.
9. Make a note of the lamp hours if you want.
10. To reset the lamp hours, press the SELECT button (the one between the four arrow keys with two concentric circles on it) on your remote.
11. It will ask you to confirm the reset--press SELECT again to confirm.

To verify you've reset the hours, you can repeat steps 1-9 above and then just press the EXIT button on your remote.

Hope this helps. Regards, James.

"Invalid format" how do I change from 1080p to 1080i or 720i?

I had a second playstation hooked to another tv in my home and took a controller from the non-LG-TV-displaying ps3 and one from a working ps3 on a seperate TV. And used the working ps3 to guide me to the settings menu on the ps3 that was not displaying video. Anyways, if you cannot see the tv screen because it is set on 1080p and your LG will not display it (Only displays up to 1080i). Start The PS3 and press the D-pad buttons in this order.

Left 10+ times. (This Takes you to the far left icon in the XMB)
Right Once. (This is the settings icon)
Down 20+ times. (To reach the bottom of the settings)
Then Up 4 times (This is Display Settings)
Press "X" Once. (This enters Display Settings)
Press Up 5 times (This Makes Sure you are at the top of the sub-menu at Video Output Settings)
Press "X" Once (This Enters Video Output Settings)

Before pressing any more buttons, Know what cables you have pluged into your TV.
For HDMI Just Press "X" and it will auto adjust to for the new TV.
For Component / D-Terminal Output Press Down Once Then "X", and X Again (This changed my ps3 from the 1080p-Invalid Format back to 1080i and fixed my problem.
For Composite Video Output Press Down Twice, Then "X" and X again.

For AV MULTI / SCART Output Press Down Three Times, Then "X"and X again.
