Usually if you open up the cover and look by where the power cord comes in there is a fuse. If there is no silver wire running through the center of it or it is any color but clear glass it is blown.

Check power supply charger, will it run without the battery? and is the battery taking a charge? If everything appears dead the power supply voltage needs to be tested make it is putting out the right amount.

Panasonic dvd video recorder dmr-e85h is dead

I had same problem. I replaced two bad capacitors on the power supply card. See http://vassfamily.net/projects/DMRE85H/dmre85h.html The capacitors I replaced were C1260 and C1261 slightly different from the one on "vassfamily.net". Everything works now for me...

Good luck.

Also for those interested, I found the "commands" listed on http://www.dxcc.com/dmr-e85h.htm useful when operating the DMR-e85h to correct problems.

My dvd player is dead.

You check the SMPS (Power Supply Section) and verify the voltages from the various terminals of the transformer accordingly check the bridge, voltage regulator, and filter circuits. If any of this parts are gone replace the appropriate parts not the all.

My DP885 will not turn on. Plugged in nothing happens.

And probably had a 90 day warranty?
The problem is surely with the power supply for the unit if it is completely dead.
If you still have the car adaptor at hand, try running it in a car. If it works there, then the major part of the set is OK and the problem limited to the power supply. Since the main supply is internal, there isn't a whole lot you can do on your own.
In many other systems (LCD TVs, for example) the supply is a separate board but it isn't likely to be this way in your player so the supply is probably part of the main board which is probably too expensive to replace or even repair.
If you decide to replace it with new, punch in the brand & model number here at FixYa to see if that unit also may suffer an early death.

Dead power supply.

Faulty power-supply symptoms:

The front panel display and buttons are completely nonfunctional and appear dead. The unit will do nothing more than display the following messages on the TV screen:

Interface error
(and or)
Interface error! Turn off the power

If a DVD or VHS tape was inserted prior to the error occurring, you won't be able to eject either from that point further. They'll remain stuck inside the unit until you've completed the repair detailed below.

Interface error! Turn off the power <--- explains how to completely restore your combo in less than 20 minutes by replacing a $1.59 part on the power-supply board. mikeadams110@yahoo.com

Dead

I think that either the internal glass fuse is blown if it is replace with one of the same rating otherwise there is a fault on the power supply board. Good luck.
