I never used any ink but brother ink, despite the fact taht this damned printer was like the hummer of ink drinkers, and i still had the same problem...
And Brother's answer was it is probably caused by using none brother ink... but they failed to explain how this non brother ink came out of their factory, in brother cartridges and in sealed packaging!!! cuz thats what i always got for the printer!

I have the MFC - 440CN printer and I have used the generic brand of Brother Ink. Apparantly, that was not good as now my unit says cyan is empty and when I replaced it with the VERY expensive Brother brand, it keeps telling me that there is no cartridge. Any ideas on how to fix this.

I too have a mfc 440cn and it won't print because it says the black ink cartridge is empty, but I've replaced the cartridge twice. I've used generic black and color cartridges for two years with this printer. I called Brother and the guy had the nerve to read from a script to tell me that the problem was I used non Brother ink. It's good to see that other people that DO use regular Brother ink get the same message. What a lie!

This is crazy.... It is probably a faulty cartridge, ink jet unit stopped up, or a cable that could be loose in the machine from the main board to the cartridge unit. There is a possiblility that the board could be bad too... This units are made so cheap so that you will buy them and then they charge you alot of money for the ink cartridges. You get disgusted with it and buy another one and that is how they make their money. It is just a revolving cycle all the time with Brother, HP, Canon, Okidata, and Lexmark too...

If you call Brother at 1-877-276-8437 and tell them that your unit is "missing black", they may cover a new printhead under a special warranty. Make sure you tell them it is "missing black" on prints and copies.

Changed yellow ink to new cartridge. Printer won't recognize.

I contacted the Brother site, the support function there. Pursuant to what I found there, I unplugged the printer for ten seconds and replugged. The message display then told me that cyan was empty, and that magenta was near empty.

I installed a new cartridge in place of the empty cyan, and that fixed it.

Remove Cartridge and cover the little ink transparent window with tippex...the black horseshoe sensor in the machine looks through this and registers if any ink is present so by tippexing it over it tricks the sensor into thinking it is full.

Normal 0 Driver could be corrupt.
Disconnect the printer or at least be sure it is turned off. I'd do both and reinstall the CD software program that came with the printer. When the software program asks you to connect the printer to the USB port, do so and it should again work properly.
Hope this helps. Bud
