Question about E-Machines -T1840-CELERON-1.8GHz,40GB Desktop Computer System (1000000127)
Hi, I have an emachine t1840 that will not boot. The problem started when my mother tried downloading an update. She thought it was frozen so she started pressing a combination of keys (don't know what I think she was just pushing). Then she did a hard shutdown, when she turned it back on it went from the screen with the emachine logo then to a black screen with a cursor. I tried getting it to the safe boot mode but cant get it there, used F8 and F5 with no success. I can only get it to the set up menu. Went to boot menu and told in to configure default settings, has not done anything yet. We have the 2 restoration CDs but we are trying to save personal files. Do have any suggestions on how to go about fixing in it without have to erase all files?
Well sounds like you are in quite a pickle. If the restore is not functioning properly you have one of a few options. Continue with the restore without backing up, take it to a computer specialist and have them back up your information and redo the operating system, or simply do nothing preserving your files. Sorry to be so straightforward, but aside from being there and playing with it myself there is really not much that can be accomplished.

Well the first thing is first. Usually depends on the Operating system. If it is a later version of XP or even Vista. Try to boot it from the restore cd. They will usually tell you if your going to lose important information and ask you if you would like to back up the information. Based upon that you can move forward or not move forward.
