Sounds like the OS software has become corrupted and will need to be reinstalled. If you have the original CD's which came with your unit, you can begin by reinstalling the OS from here. I am sure that you have installed OS patches over the years and will need to reinstall any updates that have been done.

The key is to get your computer back up and running well enough so that you can back up any personal data files and prepare the unit to be restored as if it was new out of the box. I know that this will take some time to get it back to where you were, but that is the best that I can suggest. I have had the same thing happen to me once and I now perform a data backup at least once per week.

Hope this helps. If you do not have the original CD's, you will need to obtain a new copy of the OS from Apple and this will cost you a few dollars.

Cheers,

Keith

Reset button on a powerbook g4

The Powerbook G4 power button functions like a reset button if you hold the power button in for a few seconds until the computer powers down.
  1. Hold the power button in for a few seconds (until you see the screen turn off/go black and hear the fans & hard drive stop spinning).
  2. Press the power button again to turn your computer on.
  3. If you have more trouble, you may need to boot in Safe Mode or "perform a Safe Boot":
Press and hold down the "Shift" key immediately after you hear the start-up tone. Release the "Shift" key when the gray Apple icon appears on the screen.

It's called a Power Management Unit (PMU) Reset. Here are Apple's steps:
  1. If the computer is on, turn it off.
  2. Reset the power manager by simultaneously pressing and then releasing Shift-Control-Option-Power on the keyboard. Do not press the fn (Function) key while using this combination of keystrokes.
  3. Wait 5 seconds.
  4. Press the Power button to restart the computer.

Turn on my powerbook G4 but there isn't a chime and nothing comes on the lcd screen

If there's no chime, your problem could be anything from a dead battery or bad AC adapter to a dead logic board.
Does the tip of the adapter on your AC connector light up? If not, that's a problem.
When you push the button on the battery, do you get at least two glowing LCDs? If not, that's a problem.
Otherwise, try the following: remove the battery and the AC jack to make sure the machine is off. Now insert the AC jack, and reset the power management unit by pressing the following multi-key combination:
Shift Control Option Power-button
Wait five seconds, then press the power button to attempt to start the computer normally.
The instructions above are for the 1.5GHz PowerBook G4; the instructions MAY be different if that is not your model.

The circular timer startup screen NEVER STOPS! Powerbook G4

Hi

Safe Boot is a special way to start up in Mac OS X 10.2 or later when troubleshooting. Safe Mode is the state Mac OS X is in after a Safe Boot. To perform a Safe Boot, hold the SHIFT key as your Mac starts up.

Some features don't work in Safe Mode Safe Mode can be useful for troubleshooting. However, certain Mac OS X features do not work in Safe Mode. For example, you can't use DVD Player, capture video in iMovie, use audio input or output devices, or use an internal or external USB modem. The behavior of some devices such as an AirPort card may vary depending on computer and Mac OS X version.
Safe Mode in Mac OS X 10.5 or later also disables Quartz Extreme (hardware accelerated graphics). Applications that depend on Quartz Extreme will not open, and the Mac OS X menu bar will appear solid even if "Translucent Menu Bar" is enabled in Desktop & Screen Saver preferences.

Powerbook g4 15 not turning on

Something is wrong with the operating system. If there is a flashing folder with a question mark, then it might be with the hard drive as well. If you just get that warning, then you may only have to reinstall your operating system (OS X). Get your CD/DVDs out and insert the OS X disk. Hold down C when you start the computer so it will start from the disk and not from the hard drive. After the startup program has loaded, you can try to check the hard drive and repair permissions and such to see if that works, or you can just reinstall the OS. Good luck.

No sound what-so-ever

Do you have the Apple Hardware Test Utilities Disk. If so, restart the computer with that cd inside. It will do a diagnostic and determine if there is a defect with the hardware.
If not, power off the computer.  Wait about 2 minutes. Then press and hold down the power button til you hear a long beep noise. then release. allow computer to finish booting up. Then do a sound test again.
let me know if this helps.
