There are a few questions needed to solve your problem.

What version of Vista are you using?

What hardware do you have in your computer? (Processor, RAM, Internal Hard Drives, etc)

What connection are you trying to use? (eSATA, USB, IEEE 1394, FireWire, Wireless)

You need to give details about the paticular computer. Is vista an upgrade? If you boot to the bios and tell me the bios version and make sure large disk support is on.

Hi,

Actually, the word "back up" is just for all you data, not software.
Because software, you need to re-install and re-configure it.
So, you said anti virus and mozilla, it is software, not data.
Try to download the installer and re-install it.

When you backup your software, you need to backup the installation files, not the software once it is installed as the installation procedure places various files within the Windows system folders. Simply restoring the backed up files will not re-install that software. You should back up your data files etc but the software on your old drive will need to be re-installed from scratch.

Dell Vostro 200 desktop with Windows XP is not able to handle two

Vista doesn't generally like to be installed on a hard drive that big. Well, Windows, in general doesn't.

And, from the sounds of it, you didn't install Windows on your new primary 1.5TB drive, you just copied it from the 500GB drive, which won't work.

Here's what you should to, to solve this:
1) Swap out your 1.5TB drive with the 500GB drive again.
2) Swap out your secondard 1.5TB drive, with the new one.
3) Create a partition of 120GB or less on that drive
4) Install Windows on the new partition.
5) Put the other 1.5TB drive back in, as secondary.

Once that's done, you can swap out the new 1.5TB drive with your Windows partition on it, in place of the 500GB drive.

When you boot, Windows may ask you to select which operating system you want, just select Windows Vista, and you should be good to go.

I had a similar issue a few years ago, when I tried to install Windows on a 1TB drive, and couldn't get it to work. Once I partitioned a smaller space, it worked like magic.

I have seagate free agent 500gb when i plugged it 1st time everything was fine, now windows vista is telling me that cannot recognize it

Power cycle the drive itself; once the interface is reset or the power restored to the external drive, Vista will be happy with it again (I rather expect.) Don't forget to put vibration isolation mounts under your drives if summer construction/excavation is coming.

Installed 500Gb drive into external enclosure, Vista not seeing the HD

You will need to go to the USB enclosure's/adapters Manufacturer's support site to see if Vista drivers exist for it. Microsoft won't help, as they have left it up to the hardware manufacturers to produce Vista compatible drivers.

Had you posted the manufacturer and model of the enclosure, we could have possibly provided you with a link to the driver you need, so let us know what you have?

Good luck.

I recently purchased a Dell XPS 420 Desktop computer, running Vista, from Dell, including a WD 500GB MyBook external hard drive. The power button did not function from the get-go, but I was able to copy...

Unfortunately if there is no driver for Vista, then your out of luck. Since Vista is a widely used OS and getting bigger, then the MyBook manufactures must create a Vista driver soon or they will be in danger of going out of business. Just wait and periodically check the MyBook website for new drivers.
