windows xp will show on screen then go to another screen saying : we apologize for the inconvenience, but windows did no start successfully. a recent hardware or software change might have caused this. if you computer stopped responding, restated unexpectedly , or was shut down to protect your files and folders choose last known good configuration to revert to the most recetn settings that worked. if a previous startup attempt was interruped die to a power failure or because the power or reset button was pressed or if you aren't sure what caused the problem, choose start windows normally // then it says // safe mode

    safe mode with networking

    safe mode with command prompt

    last known good configuration

    start windows normally

if you go safe mode a bunch of stuff comes up and stays and then shuts down

We have two Acer laptops, my wifes wigged out like this about 6 months ago, and mine started shutting down before having a chance to do anything also. I got a Belkin elevate cooling pad and put it under my laptop, and not only is it working good now, it is running faster than it ever did.

The Motherboard has a sensor in it and if the CPU gets too hot it shuts down to protect it from frying, it will also slow down the processes first. If you have had this computer for a while, then when was the last time you blew the dust out of all the vents? When was the last time you took the back cover off and blew everything out well, or had it professionally cleaned?

The bottom line is, lots of things can go wrong, but it is amazing how much dust gathers in the vents quickly. Dust obstructing air flow or insulating cooling fins can cause excess heat to your CPU, and heat is a computers enemy. So much so, many gamers have gone to water collers for their CPU's to keep it as cool as possible. A cool CPU is a happhy CPU.

It actually sounds like you have two problems, one is the popups, a virus, the other is the over heating, hence it won't stay on long enough for you to reinstall.

Uten: Not all laptops come with a system disc. Acer has a hidden partition with the system restore on it. If you want a disk, you have to contact the company and purchase this seperately, or you can burn the system install onto DVD's or CD's.

My computer would not stay on long enough to restore the original system setup, without propping it up a little and putting a fan nearby to blow cool air under it. It would get part way, then shut off instantly as if the plug were pulled. Putting one of the laptop cooled fan cooling pads under it has really made my computer like a new computer again.

    Hope this helps,

My Dell, recently got into a problem like it shuts down itself, only when i watch online movies. I started watching online movies eight months back but did'nt have this problem till last week. Its a Dell...

Without knowing anymore specifics, I'd guess to say that's its a heat related issue. Especially since it's summertime now and you're on a laptop. Note that when viewing online movies, especially if you choose hi-def over std-def, your laptop will use much more horsepower and thus create more heat than if you were just cruising the internet or working on an Office application. And when viewing a movie, you're doing this consistently for an extended amount of time. Eventually, your computer reaches a temp(usually specified in your computer's Bios) where it will either shutdown or restart in order to cool-off.

To verify and understand this, please perform the following steps:
1) Close any open programs, especially any internet browsers, and make sure your antivirus isn't performing a full scan.
2) Right-click on the taskbar (or hit Ctrl-Alt-Delete) and select 'Task Manager'
3) Now click on the 'Performance' tab.
4) Take note of how much 'CPU Usage' you're using. For example, I'm on a laptop, at idle, and it says 3% CPU Usage.
5) Now, open up your browser and go to where you watch online movies but don't start any videos yet.
6) Take note of the 'CPU Usage' now. Currently, I'm on Hulu and on average I'm at 8% CPU usage.
7) Now, start watching your online movie and take note of the 'CPU Usage'. For me, it jumps between 40-50% on std definition and 50-60% on hi-def.

So what's the solution if it's heat related, well for a laptop your best bet is to buy a laptop cooler (look for reviews online). I recommend any retail store or buying online from NewEgg, Amazon, or Also make sure any vents from the laptop aren't obstructed.

Now to keep a better eye on your laptop's temperature, I recommend the following 100% free, no spyware, no viruses, no adware programs:
(Note: after you install one of these, you may want to repeat the steps above and take note of the temps during each step)

Real Temp
Core Temp
CS Fire Monitor (CPU Usage tray display, etc)

Good luck!
