Question about Car Audio & Video

1 Answer

I have recently purchased an rx8, but the previous owner had fitted an after market stereo which he took with him. I have 2 problems, i have purchased a double din system which i tried to fit. I was able to get power to the system but no sound was coming through the speakers, do i need an adapter so that the speakers will work? Also there appears to be no power to the built in satnav. Any ideas on what lead may have been pulled? Kev

If the unit was installed professionally no wire's will have been cut from factory harness. Yes you would need an aftermarket adapting harness so your speakers will work . Vehicle may also be equipped with a stock amp. be sure to hook remote wire on harness to head unit.

Hello Megan,

It sounds like there is a specific wiring harness required for your Sun Fire.

First place I would start is with the compatibility of the after market stereo. Did the stereo manufacturer provide an application list with the stereo.... that provides the makes and models of vehicles it will work in?
If your stereo purchase is new, can you exchange it for a unit that is compatible with your car, including the necessary and correct wiring harness?

If not....then you will need to purchase the harness that has been identified as correct for your vehicle.

sounds the like the vehicle had an oem amplifier that was removed, most after market stereo installers will trace the speakers wires individually by continuity to by pass the factory amplifier and wire the new head unit to the vehicles speakers, if the harness has been spliced or factory amp removed, you will need to check if the amplifier still exists (usually under passenger rear seat sometimes located in trunk area) and see if the harness has been bypassed. if so you will have to reconnect the harness by color code in order to use the factory head unit

Could be an anti theft feature - should be in the manual along with reset instructions. Some of these aftermarket stereos have the switched and permanent 12V feeds swapped compared to the vehicle wiring, which can cause similar problems. Worth checking the feed voltages are correctly connected.
