Objects depending on the ambient light (sun, fluorescent tube etc) tend to have a reddish to bluish tinge. white balance eliminates this colour distortion by ensuring that a perfectly white image is obtained at the video output when the camera is pointed at a reference perfectly white object.
'Auto white balance' simply means that the camera does this automatically.

What would make my pictures and videos come out with a lot of blue tint?

Hi there,
Regarding Blue tint of Photos and Videos - This is tied directly to your White Balance Settings. When you White Balance is set to Auto, the Camera determines the best setting to use to for White Balance (How much Blue or Orange needs to be added for best White). To get a Blue Tint, the Camera's White Balance is most likely set manually to something like Incandescent or Indoor. First you will want to see that your White Balance is set to Auto - If it was not, then Auto should fix your problem. But If it is alrready on Auto, and you are still getting Blue tint both Indoor and Outdoor, then the Camera's Software may be faulty.
Hope this helps!

Auto white balance on coolpix 8400

Unless you've changed the white balance in one of the PSAM modes, your camera should still be set to Auto White Balance. See the "White Balance" section beginning on page 53 of the manual: http://www.nikonusa.com/pdf/manuals/coolpix/CP8400_en.pdf

When I shoot in arperture priority my photos come out blue. All ok in auto come. Canon d40x

The priority modes often give you more control over more features than auto mode does. In auto mode, the camera is deciding your white-balance, and may not let you select a white balance setting even if you wanted to. In aperture priority, your camera will give you control over white balance. Switch to aperture priority, then check your white-balance (wb) mode. You should still be able to select "auto" within these settings if you'd like, but feel free to play with the various settings to get your ideal photo. Good luck!

Is it possible to turn off the white balance in a Sony Cybershot DSC H5?

White Balance is not a setting that can ever be turned off, it is simply your camera's way of telling what is white so that it can process colors correctly. You can however adjust the white balance manually or simply set it to auto. Auto white balance usually works great and I would highly recommend using it. To adjust your white balance, here are the steps:

chuckman2.png
1) Press the menu button. scroll using your arrow pad to the WB option and then press the Control Button.

2) This should bring up your white balance selection screen. Keep in mind that if your camera is in full auto ( the dial is set to the camera icon ) you will not be able to adjust your white balance.

I hope this helps!

I recently purchased a canon g11 and wonder what settings are best on the camera for group shots of 12 or more for a clear shot of everyone? they are usually taken under flourescent lighting conditions.

Put the camera on "auto ISO". Set the white balance for "auto white balance" and take a test shot. Then set the white balance for "flourescent" and take a test shot. Pick the best option.

You may have the white balance set incorrectly. If so, set it to "auto white balance".

Unsteady White balance

You must switch to preset, push the awb button on the front to switch from auto white balance indoor to auto white balance sunlight (3200k to 5600k). This will automatically balance the camera to the approximate settings needed. For fine tuning the white balance.....
If you want to set the A and B buttons, first switch to A, then hit the Auto button by the user 1,2 3 button until you are off of auto total white auto focus auto iris mode AWB A ch will show in the viewer hit the Auto again and ATW shows, meaning Auto total white is on, and you will not have control over the white balance, it will continue to float and try to automatically balance in the middle of your footage. Once you are on AWB A ch from hitting the AUTO button, then point the camera at the white you are balancing to (of course put the white under the lighting you want to balance to) push the AWB button on the front of the camera and hold it in until the camera goes through the white balance mode and the black balance mode,...the camera will go dark while this is being done but an OK with the correct color temperature will show briefly on the screen when it is done and you can release the AWB button. Now you have set the A button to the white balance for the current lighting.
If you are going to be switching between indoor and outdoor, do the same for the B button above and set it's white balance to the exterior light color temp. that way you can just switch between A and B when you are moving fast between interior and exterior shots and have the correct color temp.
You could always leave the switch on preset, and hit the AWB button on the front to switch from 3200 to 5600, but remember not all light is either 3200 or 5600, that is why we use the A and B settings and get the White balance for the exact color temp of the space being shot in.

Pentax istDS Digital Camera, How to set Custom White Balance in Auto Modes

Custom white balance can only be set in P, Tv, Av, or M modes. The auto modes are, well, automatic. They are all preconfigured and intended for ease of use not configurability.

White Balance

What is White Balance? The human eye captures white as white, red as red and blue as blue, regardless of whether you are outside under the sun or inside under incandescent lighting. Although this is something that we take for granted, the human eye actually adapts to correct the changes in color under different light sources. In reality, when light sources vary, colors caught as the reflection of those light sources also vary. For instance, films for cameras that use film are designed to capture the most appropriate coloring outside under the sun. Thus when you take pictures under incandescent or fluorescent lighting without using a flash, the colors in the resulting picture may seem strange. Digital camera and digital camcorders are equipped with a handy feature called "White Balance" that corrects the changes in color under different light sources, just like the human eye. One of the white balance settings, "Auto White Balance" (AWB) automatically adjusts to correct the changes in color under different light sources. White Balance and Coloring The White Balance feature on Canon digital cameras and camcorders is set to "Auto White Balance" at the time of purchase. If you prefer different coloring, if you want to adjust the coloring more in detail, or if you want to change the coloring on purpose, we recommend that you change the white balance setting.
