Re: connecting

Jon, I am assuming you have DSL modem. Sending a fax by DSL requires one of two methods: 1. You obtain a DSL line filter suitable for connecting a standard voice telephone to the DSL line, then connect an analog fax modem to the line through the line filter. Good Luck, Tim

I was given a Lexmark x4270 and all I want to do is use it as a fax machine. What do I need to do? Do I still have to hook it up to my computer or just the phone line?

You will just plug the phone line into the all-in-one. No need to connect it to your computer if your not going to use it to print. Once plugged into a phone line, use just like a fax machine.

Phone off hook message

A "Phone Off Hook" message is not an error. It simply indicates that a telephone receiver is off the hook (the handset is lifted) and the telephone line is open. This message would be expected in the following situations:
  • A modem on the phone line is accessing the Internet.
  • A phone connected to the HP fax (or the same phone line) is using the line, or the handset has been lifted.
  • A credit card machine is using the phone line.
  • Another electronic device is using the phone line.
  • The Start Fax button was pressed with no telephone number entered. Pressing Stop or Cancel should return the display to a ready state.
When the other device is no longer using the phone line, the display should revert to the normal message. Checking the phone line The most common reason for this message is when a dial-up modem is accessing the Internet on the same phone line. Just as two phone calls cannot come in at the same time, two devices cannot use the phone line at the same time. If a broadband modem (such as DSL or ISDN) is on the same phone line and the message appears all the time, please contact your Internet provider for assistance. Even if a dial tone is present when listening to the phone line, the HP product may detect the broadband data connection at the higher line frequencies. Broadband modems must have a line filter installed to work correctly. Contact the telephone company for assistance. Please follow the directions below to verify functionality.
  1. Verify that the phone cable going into the HP fax product from the wall jack is a two-conductor cable type, not four-conductor. A two-conductor cable, like the one that ships with the HP product, has two copper leads in the connector. The connectors are usually clear, making it possible to see how many copper leads are inside the cable. Replace a four-conductor cable with a two-conductor cable.
  2. Disconnect the phone cable from the back of the HP product and the message should clear. If the message does not clear, unplug the power cable from the back of the unit, wait 15 seconds, and then plug in the power cable. If the message persists, see the "Problem still exists" section below.
  3. Disconnect the phone cable from the HP product and connect it to a single line phone. Pick up the handset and listen for a dial tone. If no dial tone is present, replace the phone cable. If a dial tone is still not present, a problem exists with the phone system. Continue with the steps below if a dial tone is present.
  4. Plug the phone cable back into the HP product and hang up any phones with a lifted handset.
  5. Disconnect, one at a time, other phones and devices using the same phone line. Check the HP product display after disconnecting each phone or device. If the message clears after disconnecting a phone or device from the line, the problem is with that phone or device.
  6. If the message still exists after unplugging all other phones or devices, see the "Problem still exists" section below.
Problem still exists If the problem still exists after performing the steps above, the line interface unit (LIU), the part that the phone line plugs into, may be defective or the HP product may need to be serviced.

Hp c309a printer/fax/scan/copy - fax's sent not being rec'd and cannot receive incoming. Ran fax test and shows "pass" on all items.

hate to ask, but is the phone line from back of printer in the correct port, the one for 1 line, next check the connection to the wall or splitter, if you are using a splitter, radio shack type, try the other side, and last, if you have a single hand set, check to see if you have dial tone at that connection. now if you are using cable modem for your phone and fax, you will need to contact them for assistance.

My lexmark S405 willnot receive faxes. It is

Assuming "cable modem" as some kind of DSL modem using your phone line for internet. Both your modem and MFU should be connected to the wall by a filter-separator, usually supplied with your DSL modem. Check its presens and proper connection. Remove any other joints or splitters

My phone line comes through a cable modem. how do i connect

well no promises but this may work

items you will need

2 coaxial cables

3 way coaxial splitter

1 old phone cable you can sacrifice

soldering iron (optional)

solder (optional)

take a coaxial cable and cut on of the ends off, throw the severed end away and strip the insulation of the coaxial cable (only strip about 3 inches of it away.

seperate the coper (or sliver wire) from the wire center wire and twist toeghter to make a neat wire

strip some of the insulation away from the white center post revealing the coper wire inside

cut end off phone cable and take about 4 inched of insulation away

connect the green wire of the phone cable to the copper outter most wire of the coaxial cable and tape it so that there isnt any of the outer most wire showing

connect the white wire to the center wire of the coaxial cable and tape so that there isnt any wire showing

connect the coaxial/phone cable you just made to the 3 way splitter

connect the coaxial line that comes from your house to the splitter

connect the other coaxail cable to the last available port on the splitter

connect the non-modified coxial line to your modem/router

connect the phone cable to the fax

this might work, no promises, i havent tried it, but it might work and is worth a try

Hooking up mx310 all in one

The phone line should plug directly into the Line plug on the DSL modem and the all-in-one should plug into the Phone plug next to it. If you need to split the line do it AFTER the line comes out of the Phone plug.

Lexmark x2470. Fax solutions not working after going high speed

Please check that the Phone line for faxing is connected to a seperate NON FILTERED phone line. Not to the dsl line. You can use a line splitter for this. Also the dial up modem may need to remain in your computer for the fax software to dial out. Hope this helps.

Fax unable to get dial tone after I switched phone service from verizon to comcast digital

splitters by their nature are flaky..i'd recomend you get a good phone line cable, since they are cheap, and have another phone line somewhere, to test the fax/cable combination, just to make sure?
