Question about Kodak EasyShare DX6490 Digital Camera

Joystick switch stuck

The rotary on/off/video on my kodak dx6490 has gotten tough to work but is still managable... however now the center toggle switch will not do right or down, only left and up. Tried cleaning from the outside thinking it's simply grit or something blocking the contacts? My next step is taking it apart to clean properly. I fear there might be tiny pieces ready to fall out.

Re: joystick switch stuck

Hello Megan,The joystick you are referring to has a bad record for failure in these model Kodaks,It is one of the most occurring problems the units have with age. It is not an easy fix nor a cheap one, the cost will exceed the value of the DX6490 on todays market. You are better off to sell your camera for parts and buy one in better condition on E-Bay,If you buy the same model you can still use all your accessories, battery, charger, etc.

SOURCE: Mode dial on my Kodak DX6490 camera is hard to turn!

dissmantle the back case (watch for 1 hidden screw under rubber covers), lift plate on back of lcd screen, remove screw on back of dial, clean where it sits on both sides (most probably from a liquid spill...tea, coffee...) , apply some lube with a cottonbud ore a bit of tisue and rebuild.
hope this helps

SOURCE: my camera Kodak DX6490 need to repair..

Know no solution, just, that is, what my camera did when it fell, the zoom lence was zoomed out, now it won't retract. Must have a crack also like yours. I took the back off and tried to see if any cables were loose, none were so I know it's in the front area of the camera. The zoom probably. My LCD screen doesn't come on either. But the camera it turns on and lights up the selection icon that I have it on. Did you get yours fixed? Sorry to post on the solution when not a solution. But, I didn't see a reply button, to type a regular reply.I did call the Kodak company and they said to buy another camera would be cheaper than getting mine sent to them to be fixed.

The joystick on my KodaK DX6490 has come loose. Can it be fixed? I can't navigate the feels as if a spring has gone underneath it.

This is exactly what happened with my DX6490. The underlying switch is only attached to the PCB with 6 or so tiny solder pads and these tend to give way after a time. It can be fixed although v. fiddly. You need to open the camera body up (screws and brute force, see previous solutions) and carefully release bits and pieces until you have access to the board. The switch can be resoldered if you have a tiny enough iron, very steady hands (use a rest) and a magnifying glass - or know someone who can do this kind of thing.

Broken joystick

Hello,This is a major problem with this series Kodak camera, as they age the switch either stops working or just falls apart !! The cost to repair would exceed the cost of a newer camera on E-Bay, I would stay away from this style control unless camera is new. Hope this helps.

Joystick broke off

Hello Carol, This is an ongoing problem with these cameras, the cost of the repair exceeds the price of a replacement camera found on E-Bay. Find a good one and you are still able to use your accessories, batteries, dock, memory cards, etc. There are some nice DX6490 cameras listed all the time.

How does the toggle, in the middle of the round and turning control, come off a kodak dx6490 camera?

Hello,If you are referring to the small joystick control the camera must be taken apart.the control is mounted under the small circuit board next to the LCD screen,Should only be performed by qualified repair person. The cost would be more than a replacement camera !!!!!! These models are prone to this problem,it is a major down-side to the model kodak camera.

Can't turn on the DX6490. I have 2 fully charged batteries, and neither one will work.

Hello, If the batteries you have are charging up with no problems then it sounds as if the rotary switch has gone 10 - 7. This model Kodak suffers from a great deal of switch problems. Cheap China plastic.
There are thousands of owners with these cameras having switch problems as the cameras age. Only cure is to replace the camera. It is not cost effective to repair.

The toggle in the middle of the mode selector does not respond any more.

Hello, Well I work on these DX6490 Kodaks as a hobby, I guess I am a sucker for punishment !!!! These guys all have problems with the small joystick you are referring to. It was just not designed or built for the long haul. As they age the problems begin to show. Not a cheap repair. Time to think about a newer camera, sell yours on E-Bay for parts, It will probably sell if the camera is in good condition.

Horizontal lines appear on the image after taking picture. As if the photo cells in the camera are kaput. Any other ideas?

The shutter doesn't work - stuck blades or the shutter cable is broken. Contact your local Kodak service center.
