Packard Bell EasyNote R4 - CD Drive won't open itself

Hi,
My father-in-law's laptop's cd drive door won't open when the eject button is pressed. He has to insert a pin in the little hole on the door to open it but this obviously isn't a good long-term solution as the disc is often still spinning when he does it.
Is this a common problem? Is there an easy fix? Any suggestions?!
Thanks

By speck, you mean dust etc? I had a quick look and there was nothing obvious. Is there anywhere in particular I should look?
Anything else I should check for?

    Thanks!

I should have said earlier that the drive doesn't open when using 'eject' in My Computer, so I'd guess it's the release mechanism in the drive that doesn't work and not the button itself.

It isn't unusual for laptop CD drives to have door problems. The buttons are right at the edge of the laptop and get beat up and sometimes they quit. Instead of opening the drive with the door button, double-click the "My Computer" icon (XP) or "Computer" icon (Vista), then right-click on the icon for the CD drive. Click on "Eject" from the menu that pops up. Windows will make sure the disc stops spinning before ejecting the tray.

It is possible to replace the drive (the only sure fix), but getting the right drive for the laptop is sometimes difficult and it will be expensive. My suggestion is to get and external USB CD drive and just use that instead. It also has the benefit of being useful on other computers as well.

CD/DVD Drive Tray problems
There are two ways to open the CD/DVD drive door if the button just below the drive tray does not work.
Go to My Computer and right click on the drive and click on Eject.
If this does not work then you can manually open the CD/DVD drive tray by -
Straighten a paper clip and gently insert it into a tiny hole below the drive tray next to the Eject button. Push the paper clip gently until the drive tray pops out, then pull the tray until it is fully out, then you can remove the CD/DVD disc.
If you still having problem opening with the Eject button, then the CD/DVD drive is faulty and needs replacing.

Hi I cannot get my d.v.d drive to open and close. What do I do?

  1. If the keyboard has a CD/DVD Eject key, press it. The Eject key is usually placed by the volume knob and is marked by a triangle pointing up with a line underneath.
  2. Double-click My Computer .
  3. Right-click the icon for the CD, CDRW, or DVD drive that is stuck, and then click Eject.
  4. If the CD or DVD drive door button is a long clear plastic bar on the front of the PC, press firmly on the right side of bar. Some models have a button on the front panel of the PC to the right of the hinged door. Press the button to eject the drive.
  5. If the drive door button is part of the PC case and is covering the actual drive door, open the door that is part of the PC case and press the Eject button on the faceplate of the drive.
  6. Restart the PC and press the Eject button on the front of the drive when the first screen appears (before Windows launches). If the drive door opens this way but does not open in Windows, another software program is taking control of the CD driver. Try shutting down or configuring any software programs that create discs or monitor the CD or DVD drive.
  7. If the door still does not open, do the following:
    1. Close all programs and shut down the PC.
    2. Unplug the power cord from the power outlet.
    3. Look for the small hole on the faceplate of the CD or DVD drive. This is the manual release. The location of the manual release hole will vary

  1. Straighten the paperclip and insert it into the manual release hole until resistance is felt.
  2. Once the resistance is felt, keep pushing the paper clip until the drawer opens a little.
  3. Remove the paper clip and gently pull out the drawer until the disc is accessible.
  4. Remove the CD and turn on the PC.
If the tray still does not open, do the following steps to check the power cable for the drive. Work on a hard flat surface over a non-carpeted floor:

  1. Turn off the PC.
  2. Unplug all power cords from the back of the PC.
  3. Press and release the Power button on the front of the computer.
  4. Remove the side panel.
e0ef68c.gif
  1. Unplug the power cable and wait five seconds.
  2. Find a different power cable that is not being used, plug the different power cable into the back of the drive, making sure that it fits firmly into the socket. If a different power cable is not available, replug the original power cable into the back of the drive, making sure that it fits firmly into the socket.
  3. Replace the side panel and plug in the power cord.

  1. Turn on the PC and press the eject button on the front of the drive.
If the optical drive does not have the manual eject feature and the CD tray will not open by using the steps in this document or if a disc has shattered inside the drive, the CD, CDRW, DVD drive may need to be replaced.

Thanks

Can't swich on laptop after restarting it.

You have a non-bootable CD in the CD drive and the startup sequence is looking at the CD drive before the hard drive. Remove the CD and you should be able to boot.
