Has your software been flashed or have you had the phone recently unlocked? has your screen sustained any damage whatsoever?
has any liquid been spilt on the phone? if the buttons are not working this seems to point to a software problem,or a pressure sensor failiure(again could be software/firmware related) it seems highly unlikely for this phone to sustain just a simple failure. unless there are other issues with this phone that you have not described.
if people have gained faults wth their phones after they have been unlocked or an attempted unlock or flash, then please say so in the first place..it makes life much more easier to try to solve a problem knowing the full details at the start..

LifehackerJul 15, 2011 - Cell phones and smartphones will differ in the menu options and buttons, but in general, the process of sending a text message to someone else's phone is pretty straightforward. From your phone's main menu find the "Messages" or "Messaging" option or application. Then select "Text Message" or "Text Messaging."
same thing happen's to mine, and i'v only had mine for two months :O aha, although i believe it's 'cause i got the screen wet, i mean it's happened before but, usually worked but, this time i think that the water dissolved into the phone making the touch screen not work, mine's still not fixed but, trying taking the phone apart and re-building it. That might help.
The screen sensor board might be bad and need to be replaced. If you cannot touch anything on the screen then you have to replace the sensor board, but if you can touch the screen but it is too hard to select any option, then it means you have to calibrate the screen to be able to enjoy it once again. To calibrate the screen, go to the phones menu, then you select the settings, then you select calibrate screen, then you touch the middle of the star that appears on the screen, After that the screen will be able to work fine again. Hope this information helped. enjoy & cheers
is there the "calendar" and "contacts" menu buttons on the bottom of the black screen?
that's what would happen to me. i just turned off the touchFLO 3D on the today screen (by going to settings, then today screen options) and it seems to not go black anymore... even after being untouched for hours.
not sure if the same thing is happening to you, but it worked for me.
you could try and use itunes to restore it or do a complete restore on the phone itself if you go into system --> general features and reset / restore
Not sure if thats exactly where it is but its somewhere around there.
If that does not help then you will need to call apple or your cell provider to claim either on the insurance or see if apple will send you a new one as there is obviously a fault with the touch screen itself.
Go to the Test Messages screen (touch the SMS button) and then touch the Compose Message button at the top right hand side of the screen (Do not start by using contacts or favorites or another way).
I opens a blank text message with the "To: " at the top.
Start to type the name of the contact (below you will see the contacts that match. At any time you can select any of those by touching them).
To add the next contact touch the "+" to the right of the first contact. It will open your contacts and you can select another or you can just type in the number of the person you want to add to the text message.
You can keep repeating this until you have them all in there.
When you have all the desired contacts in there, push "Send"
