Question about Linksys Wireless-G WRT54G Router

1 Answer

Wrt54gl + torrent + vista + WoW

Hi!

We have a Linksys WRT54GL v1.1 router, with Tomato 1.22. We use it 4 of us at the same time.

Two of us constantly using uTorrent, and one of us http, and the last one plays World of Warcraft. We got cable modem (speed is 2/1Mbit). QoS is on, 3 classifications, WoW is second prio. (Whether QoS is off doesnt matter.)

The problem started 5-6 weeks ago, till then there was no problem for a year, but we hadn't used the internet so intensively. But now, the router crashes regularly, and ping working with a 5/3 packet lost, very high latency, and even gmail is too slow to use.

If we MAC-cloak one computer, and connect to the modem directly, everything is ok. This problem comming to live around the late afternoon, and 3-4 hours later its ok again. But direct connection is always ok. (The router traffic graphs are good, wireless is off, only we are connected to the router by cables.)

3 XP and 1 Vista is connected to the router, all patched up with latest stuff. We turned off firewall, netlimiter, antivirus, defender, antispyware and everything else. I have tried to turn off Vista extra TCP features, turned off all the ipv6 and network discovery options, and file sharing on Vista - no reasonable success. I tried to set MTU with DrTCP on Vista from the non-set value to my router's 1500 default, and this worked for a week. But it wasnt the final solution. Yesterday it went wrong again around the usual time.

So my big question is, that my router is broken (7 month old), or i should try to use another firmware with QoS, or Vista should be replaced to XP, or something else? Is this crash problem a common, widely known issue?

Thanks in advance for your kind answer.

Best wishes,
Laci

    Hi.

Thx for the advice.I have been testing my system for a few days. Linksys router is the main problem, as I see now ('cause it works with a 5yearold noname router atm, but i want to repair my linksys, dont want to dispose it if there's any chance.). I changed my Vista to XP sp3 and the problem still occurs. So op system is out of question. The router is doing the same with 3 different firmwares. So its some other problem. Maybe a gone-bad memory module? I noticed that the problem occurs when we use torrent heavily for almost 10 hours. I have read that linksys router has a small memory and keeping tcp connections open almost for a day (or 5 as some1 said in a topic), so I changed my tcp connection timeout from 3600 sec to 600 sec and udp as well. Nothing happens. When it crashes, only the "reset to default settings and clear nvram" method helps. So in short, not the op system nor the firmware is the bad guy. Maybe router and webstar modem sux together? But it was cool almost for a half year...
Have no more ideas. If you have any, i'd be happy to read here.
    Thx in adnvance.

    Guys
I have same problem and microtorrent says it's specifically these Linksys Routers that have this problem. The Router is fine, but the firmware causes P2P filesharing hosts/torrents to "hang". The solution apparently is to change the firmware, but the risk is that the router gets bricked. I'm just going to get someone else to download for me.
Go to microtorrent website and FAQ for more info. Good Luck.

Dear as you mention that you use broadband line which is provided to you on twin sharing basis and the problem occur is also at the pick time only. This mean that your provider who is providing you the broadband line might have share your line for some more clients or the client which is share with you use lot of bandwidth so you might get less. If this not solve your problem than try this. every day keep one system away from network and check the performance. There is possibility that one system keep sending lots of packet in the WAN network which caused the slow down. So if you trace such system in LAN kindly check the lan card or format it.

The ISP modem connects to the main LAN port on the router. The PC connects to any other port. Done. You should have internet via wire at this point.

DNS server not responding on WRT54GL Linksys router

You are looking for DHCP server. It provides the IPs addresses for devices to connect. DNS resolves the IP into a name. Not really required unless you are setting up a virtual server, or the special setup.

Linksys wrt54GL v.1.1 is saying nework cable unplugged-won't ping

Hi,
Make sure that the computer is connected to the router properly and there is not loose conection. If it good then check the IP address on that computer. Make ssure that there is static IP address on the computer.
The default gateway number will be the IP address to access the router set up.
If you do not get IP address and if it says media disconected then try to disable the Local area connection and enable it.
If that doesn't work then try on another computer.

Can't access adminpage of the router from the 1st lan

you can use ethernet cable, or you can use the wireless.

search for the wireless network and connect your pc to that wireless network. or simply connect an ethernet cable to your pc and connect other end to the Linksys WRT54GL .

open an internet explorer (or whatever you use) type ip address.
