Question about Magellan Maestro 4250 GPS
Sometimes i can put it to charge through the usb but it wont turn on like normal. It also seems a little warm.Normally I hook it up and it charges over night and it will last all day.Is my device defective?
No the device is not defective. magellan has this stupid usb interface problem preventing the unit from being charged and used at the same time, they do that so you have to use there charger. the unit will say usb connected and will not boot up like normal at all. unit will be locked up until the usb is unplugged. most usb devices charge at 5v with 500mA, and the magellan requires 5v 1A. Ipod Charger charges at the 1A with 5v but wont work

If sometimes it charges through USB and sometimes it doesn't, and you are using the *same* charger every time, then it sounds to me like the unit or charger may be defective, because whatever behavior you get, you should get every time.
It does not charge from a USB connection to a computer. When you hook it to the computer, it goes into its computer-docking mode, where it can't be operated, but you can access it and update its software from your PC (using the Magellan Content Manager program).
It does charge through its USB port from an AC adapter, as long as the adapter provides enough power (1 amp). If you're using some other AC-USB charger (i.e. from some other device), which does not provide enough power (say, 500 mA), the unit will not charge. It will sense that something has plugged into its USB port, but not seeing the needed power to charge, it assumes it's plugged into a computer, and puts up the computer docking screen. It is possible that this might be bad for the unit and/or the charger. And it is cerrtainly useless, as the unit is neither charging, nor capable of being operated.
And of course, it also charges through the car charger.
