Check to see if anything is stuck between the rollers. You may want to try cleaning the rollers and carriage as well with a damp cloth. Wait for everything to dry before trying a test print again.

Also see if the waste tank is full. There is a small rectangular sponge like pad on the right side of the printer (inside) where the print heads come to rest. Take a tissue and dab the spongy pad down to remove any excess ink that may be present. You should be able to see the pad when you open the cover.

Hi and welcome to FixYa,

Initially, your concern would be corrected with cleaning of all the rollers and guides and the paper path. This could have stemmed from an overflow of ink or an waste ink pad nearly full. This then could have contaminated/smudged the rollers and guides and the paper path.

If the above solution has merit, pls click on my "Ask Me" to explore additional options, postback how things turned up or should you need additional information.

This is most likely the toner cartridge.
Replace it .
Most likely there is an obstruction blocking the light getting to the drum.

There is also a canon utility that you can run to perform the cleaning and alignment for the cartridge.
But first clean the cartridge head with a cotton. I think that should fix the issue.....Kevin

My Canon i850 accepts data from my pc. The printer head seems to go into action, but no print goes onto the paper after it goes through the printer. What could be the cause of this ? I have recently...

It could be a number of things
1: usb cable could be faulty this sending incorrect info across
2: could be something wrong with the actual print head try opening up the machine and see if you can move the carriage left to right by hand
also check if your able to print a test page from the unit itself to confirm it can print without the pc

I have a Canon i850. it all of a sudden quit printing text...any text...from any source. It will print images in all colors but no text. I've updated drivers noting works.

Try it this way...Uninstall the drivers once again, disconnect the printer from the computer. Download and install the new printers and do not connect the printer until instructed to do so. Run the installation and when the printer is connected and drivers are installed...reboot again and give it a try...You did select the proper drivers for XP or Vista whatever your operating system: http://www.usa.canon.com/consumer/controller?act=ModelInfoAct&tabact=SupportDetailTabAct&fcategoryid=232&modelid=8047#DownloadDetailAct
there is also some update software on this page this also might help make things run a little better. If you are not using XP back up one page and select Vista
Good luck, please leave rating..thank you

Copy is smearing from top to bottom on left side of paper about 1 inch wide.

The print in the smudged area, does it wipe off the page like not fused well to the paper. Do you also have a crinkling noise, if so the sleeve in the fixing assembly has torn. You may still have it under warranty with canon and can get it fixed for free.
Good luck

Canon PIXMA MX700 printhead immediately coated with ink, smudges

It's likely that the foam pads that the print head rests on when the printer is not in use are saturated with ink. They're to the right as you look into the printer: a rectangular one for black ink and a square one for the colored ink. If you power the printer off and back on, with the cover open, you'll see where the printhead goes to rest.

The pads aren't easy to get at, but you can blot them with a paper towel. Gummy, half-dried ink dissolves in rubbing alcohol, and you can soak a paper towel or a cotton ball with alcohol and wipe down the area. I've had good luck soaking the pads with alcohol, then blotting them dry with a rag.

Size of page printed small

Check your default paper size on both the document program you are using and the printer. You could have it set for 5X7 and that's what it will figure for, even with 8 1/2X11 paper.
