Quickbooks Pro 2008 Payroll problem

Box opens "Missing configuration file. Please reinstall Quickbooks."

When I try to reinstall, I get the message, "you are currently running windows xp, for windows xp this version of quickbooks requires service pack 2 or higher. You may upgrade to the latest service pack than install quickbooks or continue with the installation and run quickbooks. However, intuit may not be able to provide technical support from issues that result from your operating system. Would you like to continue the install?"

Yes, "Quickbooks has experienced a problem and must shut down ..."

Installation has detected that quickbooks is in use, please close program and ...

Exactly the same problem when I try to "Pay Employees". Starting to get stressed about it, there are 8 posts in the Intuit forum and they haven't released a fix yet. The end of the year is coming and I need to get my payroll up to date and pay all the liabilities for the year.

I have the same issue, and I am also starting to get concerned. I haven't tried re-installing QB because it hasn't seemed to help the other users. Where is Intuit in all of this?!

  • teeterfam Dec 18, 2008

I also got shut down when clicking "pay employees". I uninstalled and re-installed QB without the updates and it works fine, but I'm having other problems now which causes QB to shut down, like when I try to email a report, which didn't used to cause problems. I really hope a fix comes soon so that I can allow the updates to install and be rid of these errors.

When I went to Payroll I got the same 'missing config. file; reinstall QB' Is this for real? Where did the missing file go? I only use this computer for QB and now this out of the blue. Any solutions better than starting over with a reinstall? That rearly goes smooth.

I also have QB Pro 2008 receive "Unrecoverable Error" box & must shutdown system when I click on "pay employees". Everything else within the program works fine so hesitate uninstalling etc.

Same thing here when attempting to "send payroll data", though mine's with pro 2009. I found this KB item which indicated that I should update:

http://payroll.intuit.com/support/kb/kbitem/1009052.html

I followed the update instructions here:

http://support.quickbooks.intuit.com/support/productupdates.aspx

Even though my update status was "nothing new" for each category, I hit the "Update Now" button anyway (it was enabled, why not?). It went through the motions of updating (even though there was nothing to update). When it finished, I closed and re-opened QB, then I was able to send the payroll data. This software is far from the gold standard I thought it was going to be.

I had to reinstall Quickbooks 2008 on a Windows installation that never had it on there before (virtual machines are handy) and now it works again. I am staying far away from letting it upgrade to latest; that's how my troubles started. I also doubt I will ever shell out money for a more recent version; I upgraded from 2005 to 2008 and it took away the ability to do automatically do IRS 941 forms if you don't pay for monthly payroll services. There has to be better accounting software that doesn't leave users stranded at year-end.

Payroll set up with child support garnishment etc. in Quickbooks

You have to link the payroll item to payroll liabilities account. The default setup links them to a general account of payroll expenses and or payroll liabilities. You have to setup individual accounts in the chart of accounts and link the related payroll item to the account.

Quickbooks Pro 2008 Payroll Setup

QuickBooks will set up both sides of a simple plan if you use the EZ set up.
OPen the payroll item list, click on Payroll item (at the bottom of the window) and then new item. Chose the EZ set up and it will walk you right through it. You can then go in and edit each item (employee and company) as you need to.

Quickbooks Pro 2008 Payroll Setup

Did you set up the simple plan through the ez set up? QuickBooks will automatically default to the USUAL settings -ie employee portion is only taxable at the state and local level)
You might want to check how you have it set up. To do this
Go into the edit payroll item, click through until you find the screen for Taxes and select the items that are affected by the contribution (check with your state and local taxing authorities to see if you need to withhold for the employee portion)
