External HD trouble w/ Re-Allocated Sector Count? Data recovery?

My dillema, I have a failing external hard drive. It is a Western Digital 500GB Model #:WDG1U5000N. The hard drive when writing a lot of data to it, copying a lot of data from it, or when accessing it(loading music into a media player) the drive will stall, the progress bar of whatever it is will stall for a few minutes. Finally I will get a prompt asking me if I want to format the drive or not.

When I run a diagnostic tool from Western Digital the hard drive fails in one area, Re-Allocated Sector Count. Western Digital has told me that I need a replacement. I am under warranty still. When I receive my replacement product I will have 30 days to return the defective one. For data recovery they suggested finding some sort of data recovery software or if that doesn't work try a service. There is almost 400GB of data on my external hard drive. Old documents/homework, backups of older systems, and my music collection. I wish to recover as much as possible.

What is the process of recovering this? What type of software should I be looking for? What capabilities should it have? Any recommendations?

What are my options for data recovery? If I have both external drives connected to my laptop through USB, can I send it directly to the new one? I have a 160gb internal hard drive as well. What is the process, just a copy of files? I have read about a "sector to sector" image of the failing drive for recovery(which I know nothing about)? I am not sure what I need and need some help.

This is a new topic for me, and I don't know much about it. If anyone has any insight on the process I should take to recover as much of my data as possible it would be greatly appreciated. I want to have a plan ready for when I get my replacement drive so I can get the defective one back in time. Thank you for any help.

Had a similar issue with Western Digital. Unfortunately, the only way to get your data off the drive is to send it off to a data recovery studio.
You may try finding it in COmputer Management-Disk Management, but I doubt you'll have any luck. Most probably the read/write heads are damaged.

dear,dont take tention,if data is deleted accidently i can recover total data your using some software.
so first you try
1-remove some data from Hard disk
2-may be virus occured or attach with files.
yes you can easily recover the delete files.

There is a number of data recovery solutions online. Just google it. I would recommend one that sends out a static sensitive bag for transportation. But the customer service rep you spoke with, is probably right. The actuator arm has probably locked up and is failing to move back and forth reading and writing to the platters. Good luck and i feel for you with it being your new born on the hard drive.

Hi, As I have responded to a similar post, this is a common problem with external storage. Based on your post/description: 1. Your laptop does not recognize the external hard drive via its USB connection - try on a different computer - if it is still a no go, then it's not a PC problem; 2. Try replacing the cable - again if a no go, so it's not an interface/cable problem; 3. That leaves you only with the WD500GB itself as the possible at fault. An external hardrive would consist of 2 main parts, the electronic board and the hard disk itself. The board seldom (if ever) fails. Its function is to provide conversion/interface from the SATA/IDE connectors of the HD to the out USB/Firewire. The HD more often than not fails. Most external storage uses a standard HD inside the enclosure. Your possible options: a. Claim warranty/replacement; b. Replace the HD only; c. Physically remove the HD and connect it directly inside a desktop either as IDE or SATA and run manufacturer's diagnostic and/or third party recovery software; d. Seek services of professional data recovery firms (if data/files are mission critical); Hope this be of some help/idea. Post back should you need further information. Good luck and kind regards.
