Dear Rorange,
to copy data from your your old hard drive to new one, you have to change their config. you should have to make ,Your new Hard drive as master hard drive and old one is Slave, through Jumper configuration, these Jumper configuration is already printed on all Hard Drives.

Be Happy Always

I've actually had a Hard Drive running with a missing pin. However, somewhere along the line it will give blue screen errors, but atleast may give you enought time to get what you can off it.

How do i connect a hard drive in the usb port

You need a hard drive docking station. It has a USB cable linked to a hard drive plug-in connection. The plug-in section should have an option with the same pin arrangement as the hard-drive. The hard drives generally have male pins so the docking station should have female pins. The docking stations generally have more that one pin arrangements for different types of hard drives ie. SATA etc.
Check with your local electronics shop, if you have one, else explore Ebay and/or Google.

If both your Dell and the hard drive have USB ports you may be able to download directly. Other wise you may purchase an external drive and load the data to that. The external drive almost certainly will connect by USB.

How to transfer files from old to new computer

You have a number of options. You can buy a usb cable male to male and transfer. Connect a usb stick large enough to connect and copy them there. Alternativley you can remove the harddrive from the old computer and put it inside the new one as a secondary drive or move them hard drive to hard drive. Hope this helps.

Need to install new hard drive, but want to keep game saves etc. Do I install drive and simply use transfer cable to retrieve dat from old drive?

That's exactly what you do. Once you transfer the information, it will no longer be on the old hard drive. In other words, it will move the information, not copy.

One bad lead can cause a computer to continue on a cycle or to shutdown or fail to detect your hard drive
Test the leads that attach to your ((hard drive from the motherboard)) or replace all the leads that attach to your hard drive including electrical extensions + IDE,SATA and the ones that attach from your ((motherboard to hard drive))
make sure all leads that are attached to your drives dvd\cd 3 1/2 inch floppy have secure connections and are not faulty even the electrical extensions or just replace them they are probably old and faulty a computer needs its connections to have an end so any faulty leads will end up with a computer error

hope this helps

Jumper off will set the drive to slave. If you can connect both drives to the same ribbon cable with the master on the end & the slave to the second connector. Look at your bios as win is booting up to see if shows the drive as slave, you will not be able to copy windows as a operating system off of the drive, but should be able to copy files.

Good luck on your endevors.

I want to pull info off a hard drive & put onto a disc.

Hi,
If your new computer doesn't accommodate the drive then you will need a three and a half inch hard drive enclosure to put the hard dive in from the other computer.
You will have to look at the drive to work out which type enclosure you will need.
It will either be a SATA connection like this >>>>
3be7131.jpeg

Or a IDE/ATA connection like this >>>>
60d4e19.jpeg

If you compare the connections on these examples you will one has plastic connections and one has brass pin connections.
As soon as you know which type of drive you have you can then proceed to purchase an enclosure.
When you have got the correct enclosure all you have to do is install the drive and connect it your new computer.
You will be able to access the drive, copy your data and use the drive as an external hard drive.

Regards.

Transferring an internal hard drive to another computer

Hi,

There are several ways but the easiest would be to use an external USB interface such as a VANTEC CB-ISATAU2 SATA/IDE to USB 2.0 Adapter or any comparable product. This would provide the IDE connections to your old hard drive as well as a USB cord to your new PC's USB port. This is of course assuming that all you would want is access to the files/data in the old hard drive.

If your plan is to use the old hard drive as the master (meaning you want to boot from it and use your old OS with its settings on the new PC), chances are you would need to reinstall/repair the old OS since it would not run in the new PC.

If you want to install the old HD as a permanent device inside the new PC, you would need an IDE connector and install the old HD as a secondary master/slave.

If you just need to copy/move files from the old HD to the new PC, the initial method would be your best bet. The interface can be borrowed for a one time use.

Hope this be of help/idea. Pls post back how things turned out or should you need additional information.

Good luck and kind regards.
