My desktop is all empty. The start menu and my desktop icons have all disappeared. The only thing that shows up when I turn on the computer is the background and the cursor. I have tried to reboot and restart in the safe mode but that did not help. Please tell me what to do.

No i mean everything the taskbar, start menu and the desktop icons, all are missing.

First a question; you say you only have the background and cursor does that mean literally everything else is gone including the start button in the lower left and the task manager in the lower right? Or do you mean that all your icons, shortcuts, folders and files you had on your desktop are gone?

Sorry it took so long for me to reply, I just got back from getting my daughter?s car unstuck (snow). Anyway this could be caused by a damaged/problem driver or a corrupted user profile. Here is the link to a Microsoft document that give detailed instructions how to determine what is causing the problem and how to fix it.

Be sure to follow the instructions exactly and remember that your data is at risk right now. If you can't afford to loose it I would strongly suggest you take you PC to the local authorized computer shop and have them look at it.
