Printing only in black

Hi, how I can configure my Canon 830 printer to print only in black ink even the colorful images?

Thank you!

How do you make the printer USE only black ink? I just printed a 30-p draft and clicked on "greyscale" (also clicked "fast" to use less ink), but as I watched the printer box that comes up while printing, it showed more color ink being used than black. All ink cartridges showed full when the printing started, but at the end very little of the large black cartridge had been used, while about one-third of the yellow and blue were gone. What settings will let you use ONLY black? Thanks for any help.

When you get the printer option page click on properties, in the main page there select gray scale printing. Click OK to get back to the print page and ok there to print.

CANON mp 830 NOT PRINTING BLACK EVEN THOUGH BOTH BLACK INK CARTRIDGE IS HALF FULL. i have taken the print head out, cleaned the contacts and still the same. what else can I do?

Copy machine makers are notorius for forcing users to use a bit of the more expensive color mixed in with black. I can't print in black, it is called greyscale, therefore it has color in it. If you only print in greyscale, you'll notice your color cartridges going lower over time.

If the black ink runs out does the printer automatically use color ink to print black?

Hi. When you are printing in black but "black and white" is not selected in the printer "properties", the printer will use some of your colored ink to print grays. If the black ink goes out, it will give you an error and will not print using colored ink even if you are printing black only. Hope this helps.

How do you print a document using color ink? I am out of black ink.

Ink is a lubricant for the print heads. Some color ink is used even if you only print in black or vice-versa. If you printed with black ink missing, you could destroy that print head from the friction of running without ink to lubricate it. That's why most printers won't allow you to print with black ink missing even if you aren't using it. That's the case with your Canon printer.

If you allow a color to go empty, the residual ink in the head could clog and become permanently blocked. You would never be able to print that color again. So always replace ink cartridges as soon as they are empty.

Black and white prints are not black

Sorry, steve, that you are experiencing this problem.

According to canon.com's website regarding the i9900 InkJet Photo Printer:

Why color ink may be used when printing in black and white Even when printing in black and white, color ink is used for the following reasons:
  1. Automatic cleaning of the print head.

To prevent the print head nozzles from clogging, the print head is automatically cleaned periodically. At that time, a small amount of each color ink is consumed.

Therefore, although printing in black and white is performed, color ink is also consumed.

  2. Color inks may be used to create black.

When printing in grayscale or on photo paper or when duplex printing, although printing appears in black and white, the color black may be created using the three (cyan, magenta, and yellow) color inks. Printers without a pigment black tank / cartridge will print black / grayscale will create a composite black using color ink even on plain paper.

Therefore, although printing in black and white is performed, color ink may be consumed.
  3. In order to keep the heavy black ink from smearing on the page or in the printer, color ink is used when duplex printing to help create black text.

    ---
I might suggest taking out the color ink cartridges leaving only black there, but some printers don't take kindly to this. So, you may have to further experiment with magenta, cyan, and yellow to make it at least seem b&w to your best eye's judgment.

Good luck on this.

I want to use black ink only and stop wasting color ink

Hi,
Go to Control Panel->Printers. Then right click on your printer and select printing preferences. There you will see an option like Print in Grayscale or Black and White only.
However, please note that some printers although they are set to print in grayscale they also use the color cartridge and some even don't allow you to print in grayscale if the color cartridge is empty. Why is that? Manufacturer's way of charging you more money.

Not printing

The remaining levels of the following ink cannot be correctly detected.
Color
The following ink is running low.
Black [830]
Prepare a new ink cartridge.
The resulting print quality may not be satisfactory, if printing is continued under this condition.
If either black or color ink cartridge has run out, you can set the printer to continue printing with the other cartridge from the Ink Cartridge Settings on the Maintenance tab of the printer driver.
