A dead HD rarely will kill the video signal too, you don't need a HD for the bios to work and at least get to the command prompt. A dead processor on the other hand won't let the video signal come through, blank screen and no POST beeps are a big clue. Check the memory in another unit if possible, that's the easiest place to start.

Are you getting anything on screen?
Something funky could be goin on with the ligths OR

Your hard drive crashed.  If you cannot bring up the bios, you will need to have it serviced. They may be able to salvage the data and files, but all depends on the state of the hard drive.

Also, What were you working on/doing prior to this episode?

1100 ferrari acer power but no screen?

Assuming no BIOS is displayed
  • Memory could be bad
  • Motherboard could be bad
  • Backlight could be bad
  • Inverter could be bad
  • Screen could be bad

Pull the memory modules out and boot the computer if it makes it to BIOS and then beeps at you one or more of the memory modules are bad, replace one at a time if you have more and test until it breaks again then you know which to replace.

To Test the inverter and backlight hook up an external monitor and boot the computer. If it displays correctly on the monitor then you've narrowed it down to a bad screen, inverter or backlight. Backlights don't usually go out.

Remove the monitor and boot the computer. Shine a flashlight on the screen and look for a very faint image of what should be displayed. If you see one I'd start by replacing the inverter. If you don't see one the screen is bad.

If none of this worked then replace the motherboard.

Acer aspire one note book problems start up won't let me reboot quick blue screen message tried everthing in :f8: options and won't let me in to safe mode

I have the same problem with my acer laptop 3680. It is stuck on the BIOS screen with "press f2" at the bottom. I can get into the menu by pressing f2 repeatedly as soon as I hit the power button, and was able to change the boot order to CD first, but it will not boot from the Windows CD even though the CD drive is flashing and I can hear the CD spinning - same as the hard drive - still get the BIOS screen. I took it completely apart, dusted with compressed air, replaced RAM (new), and still same f2 screen. I removed the hard drive and booted up and the BIOS screen did not appear, but it said "Drive not found". Therefore, I think I have a dead BIOS battery since the BIOS isn't present without the HD. I did not notice a battery when I had it apart and have read that it is soldered in and almost impossible to replace. I ordered another motherboard on eBay (search: motherboard 3680) for $89 BIN today and will post again with results hopefully next week.
Have you tried pressing ALT+F10 on boot? If lucky, that will get the recovery console and you'll lose all data. I was able to save everything from my HD by plugging it into my PC with a USB/IDE adaptor which can be bought for cheap online and in most computer stores.

I have an Acer Aspire 3680 and all i get is a black screen when i power up. it seems to get power, but nothing appears on the screen when you boot up. is it the graphics card or could it be a bigger issue?...

Do you hear any sounds?,.. see any LED lights? Do you see any way to know there is power to the laptop? Please provide more details so that you can get an answer that is somewhat accurate.
without any more information to go on,.. the problem could be motherboard, backlight, backlight inverter, power supply, dc power jack (in the laptop),.... and that is just the short list,.. Please provide more details to get a better answer

Will not boot give error code one long beep tone 2 short no screen no HD or display Tone will not happen if Memory is out . HD is not powering up not backlight to screen no fan sound this is a Toshiba...

Without knowing which bios chip is in the machine this will be quite difficult. One long and 2 short beeps, with some bios chips, means faulty graphics controller chip.

I have no POST or screen power when I turn on the laptop

Try this.
Remove the main battery and power the laptop up - if it works connect the battery - no need to shutdown.
Next thing to try.
Remove the main battery and the BIOS battery wait 1/2 + hour, insert BIOS battery but not main battery - power up, configure BIOS Date & Time setting if OK connect main battery.

If none of this work, you have a large paper weight.
You can salvage the hard disk and insert it into an USB hard drive adapter case and use it as an external USB hard drive.

Dell inspiron 1000 power lite comes on then goes off cd works, num lock lite on, screen not on and then power light goes off other lights on and cd works, hd light not on.

Motherboard failure. You can find replacement motheboards on Ebay but this is such a low end system it isn't really worth repairing

Toshiba Tecra 8100 will not boot, even the toshiba boot screen not displayed

Thats a link to info about bios updates on the tosh website. If you're not getting to the toshiba screen then POST has not completed which means that either there's a hardware problem or the bios is corupt. If you're sure the RAM is ok try flashing the Bios.

Problem is though, to make the bios update disc, you need a working computer.

and, err, It'll probably have to be a toshiba!
(sorry, not my fault!)

Laptop won't BOOT

This is VIkram Kumar Thumu from India- Hyderabad. I have seen your message at this web site... and I would like to provide my solution on the issue.

Well, the message " 1-07 test failed " by HDD test in BIOS confirms that Hard Disk Drive of your Laptop is gone bad .
Hence to resolve the issue, need to replace a new Hard Disk Drive for your notebook.

I am sure that this will resolve the issue.

If you have any queries or issues you can mail at I'll be glad to answer ...

Thank you.

Power Up Problem

If its unplugged and its doing this with a charged battery, then the battery may be bad and its max charge is so small that it wont start but says its full.

Try removing the battery and plugging it in and starting it, if it works, Bad Battery.

Itry removing the CD drive, some older Dells would do the same thing when the drive or bagttery would go bad. If so, then Bad Drive or battery.

Try taking out the Hard drive and then starting it with no Hard drive and see if you get a bios screen, if so, go into the bios and reset everything to defaults and try starting it again with the HDD put back in.

If its really old, past 3 years, the bios battery may have god out and needs to be replaced, some laptops have a watch battery soldered in or a rechargabl battery that connectd to the board, if so, its up to your ingenuity to replace it with a new one however you can. although i would try this if your not mechanically inclined, taking apart, most laptops is difficult unless its your job and you know your stuff.

Hope this helps a little.

CD / DVD player not listed as device on Windows Explorer

Try physically removing the player and fire up the laptop. Power down the laptop, replace the player and power back up. If that doesn't help, see if BIOS recognizes it.
If that doesn't work, get back to me.
