Have you burned CDs on it before? If so how long ago? Have you added any new programs since it worked? Many burning programs don't work well when installed on the same PC. If you are running winXP there are some permission issues that can cause this, otherwise your burner may have died, if you put in a disc with info on it, does it read the disc or time out trying to? Most of the drives I couldn't get to work didn't read or write.

First you'll want to check on your burning program and make sure the proper cd/dvd burner is checked if your burner offers that option.
What burning program do you use.If all seems well then try these steps.----------------

Right click my computer and then properties
Click on hardware then devices make sure your device is showing. If showing update your driver.
If it is not showing you'll need to go to add new hardware and add this device again.
Let me know how it works out.
They may be other solutions to try.

CD/DVD burner stopped working

I had the same problem on my Sony Vaio and I found a free program called "CD Tray Pal" You just click on the desktop icon and it loads and windows recognizes your drive. Amazing, after a while, it fixed itself and I did not have to use it anymore! Hope this helps. http://www.e-systems.ro/ You should be able to find it on this site.

My dell d610 laptop has dvd/cd rw i want to know if this means i have dvd rw too if not what should i buy so that i will have dvd rw hopefully it will be something i just plug in this is my first computer...

Your built in CD Drive is a DVD player and regular CDR - CDRW burner, this means you cannot burn DVD's. To burn DVD's I would recommend you purchase an external DVD burner, here are some links to ones that are compatable to your computer.

Unable to burn cd's

First of all you try to burn the cd with a valid cd burner, uninstall the already existing cd writer and try to install again.
In case of laptop you can try the company's own cd burner.
Else... The main problem occurs when the seating of the driver is not proper.
You can remove the driver yourself if you are comfortable with or else you have to give to the authorised service center to remove and reseat the driver again....

It could be that the burner has gone out in the drive, this is a common problem. Before you go and replace the drive, it could just be a simple driver glitch, try uninstalling the drivers for the CD drive from the device manager, then reboot. The machine will find the drive and reinstall the drivers. If this doesn't work then you can replace the drive.

DVD became a CD driver???

Early in the Disk burning process (at least with some of the older versions of Nero), you get to select which device to use as your writer.

Some devices get two entries on this list - one as a CD burner and one as a DVD burner (with the default being whichever you used last).

See if you can select the "DVD burner "instance of your device.

Cd/Dvd burner stopped working on my laptop

Check the bios when the laptop first boots. There should be a message saying something like "Press F2 To Enter Setup"

See if your drive is detected and listed in the bios.

If not, power off, pop the drive out and reinsert it then try again.
You may have to turn the laptop over and remove one screw about 5" from the edge but near the drive. It will not be in any panel. If you can't see it then a quick read of your manual should show you how it comes out.

If it is detected in the bios, then boot Windows again and go into System then Device Properties (you can reach SYSTEM from control panel)
Check the list to make sure your drive is installed under Windows.

If that does not help, then post back and we can try a few other things.
