Question about Mitsubishi WS-65809 65" Rear Projection Television

1 Answer

Hit wrong TV remote button, knocked out HD programming

Picture no longer clear, shadows on letters and around people on screen, picture is bowed, and some channels don't come in anymore. Also, when switching channels, looks like not programmed, lots of bars and snow until picture comes in.

You have multiple issues. The shadows are likely convergence IC solder connections breaking or the ICs actually failing. If you can bump the tv to get it to re-align, it just needs resoldering. If it doesn't snap back, it needs new ICs. The channel issue is less common and could be a number of things. You may want need to just autoprogram again to, but may have a fluid leak issue. You can unplug the tv and remove the back panel to inspect for fluid on the signal board (board with tuners, where cable plugs in).. DON'T touch the fluid, highly toxic stuff. Take a bright light and see if any drops have made it down to the board. If so, the severity of the leak will determine the repairablity. Try using a VCR or cable box to bypass this problem if no fluid leaked, that is the best (cheapest) way around it.

I have a Philips 51PW9303 Rear Projection TV that had blue shadows around the sides of the screen and now has a green and red bowed line at bottom. Does I need a convergence board to solve this?

If the following doesn't work the tubes could be at the end of life:
Adjusting convergence:
Note: For best results, the Projection TV needs to be turned on for 15 minutes or longer before adjusting the picture tubes (convergence).

To adjust the convergence of the picture tubes:
  1. Press the 'MENU/SELECT' button on the remote.
  2. Press CURSOR RIGHT to enter the PICTURE menu.
  3. Use CURSOR DOWN and RIGHT to select and enter MANUAL CONVERGE.
  4. Press CURSOR RIGHT to select CONVERGE RED or press CURSOR RIGHT and DOWN to select CONVERGE BLUE.
  5. A crosshair will be shown on the screen. If there is any red or blue fringe around the crosshair, use CURSOR RIGHT, LEFT, UP, DOWN to try and merge the fringe colors with the crosshair.
  6. Press the 'MENU/SELECT' button to return to MANUAL CONVERGE menu.
  7. Press the 'EXIT' button to exit the menu.
If you are satisfied with the convergence you may stop now. Otherwise, you can continue and adjust the convergence more using mult ipoint convergence.
To Adjust multipoint convergence:
  1. Press the 'MENU/SELECT' button on the remote.
  2. Use CURSOR RIGHT to enter the PICTURE menu.
  3. Use CURSOR DOWN and RIGHT on the cursor ring to select and enter MANUAL CONVERGE.
  4. Press CURSOR RIGHT and DOWN on the cursor ring to select MULTIPOINT RED or MULTIPOINT BLUE.
  5. A grid of crosshairs will appear on the screen. If there is any red or blue fringe around any of them, press CURSOR RIGHT to enter NAVIGATE mode.
  6. Use CURSOR RIGHT, LEFT, UP, and DOWN to move to a crosshair that has a color outline.
  7. Press the 'EXIT' button to enter ADJUST mode.
  8. Use CURSOR RIGHT, LEFT, UP, and DOWN to merge the color with the crosshair.
  9. Press the 'STATUS/EXIT' button to return to NAVIGATE mode. Repeat as necessary.
  10. Press the 'MENU' button to return to the MANUAL CONVERGE menu.
  11. Press CURSOR DOWN until SAVE MULTIPOINT is selected.
  12. Press CURSOR RIGHT to save the multipoint settings.
  13. Press the 'EXIT' button to exit the menu.

I have a HCN4727w samsung. Red/green shadowing. Bowed image

Projection sets have two very common problems.

The first common problem is convergence

These sets need to have all three colors - RED - BLUE - GREEN - lined up correctly on the screen in order for the picture to look normal. This is called convergence.

When its out of alignment the video will look 3-D, wavy, distorted, etc. Most of the time you just need to adjust your convergence in the menu. If you cannot adjust it in the menu - then your convergence is broken and needs to be repaired. Convergence problems are very common on all Projection TV sets including Sony, Samsung,JVC,Philip Magnavox,Panasonic,Akai,Pioneer, Hitachi,Mitsubishi,Zenith and others.
You can get more information and a DIY convergenece repair kit with instructions from the link below.

Here are some of the most common problems with these sets...

*Screen Looks 3-D
*Colors wont align
*Screen may look distorted or warped or bowed
*No Audio/Video - TV Shuts down - May also make a constant chirping sound

Problem #2 - Another common problem is dull or washed out video.

Your set may have one or more of the following symptoms....

*Dull looking picture
*White looking picture
*Halos around objects
*Red/Orange looking picture

My tv the picture is bigger than the tv screen

it sounds like you have hit the zoom button or your aspect ratio isnt right. the aspect ratio should be set to 16:9 (if there isnt a button for aspect ratio, change it in the menu) and there should be a zoom button on your remote and just keep hitting that and it should return to normal. If neither works, post your tv brand and model and i'll try to find another answer

Shadow effect

I think it's called "tubes" for the TV, the projection tubes are messed up, and you probably killed your bulbes. Very expensive to fix, just part out what can be used and get a new TV, or get a 60" tv with a smashed screen, and reuse your screen. People sell those on craigslist.org all the time with broken screens because they do not know how to replace them for only 100-200$
