Question about Gateway PC Desktops

1 Answer

I have an old Gateway Solo 1450 laptop that I have upgraded the RAM and now need to do a BIOS update. (I keep getting error messages and IE closes after a while.)The installation instructions(from Gateway support site) tell me to copy all of the BIOS files from the C:\CABS|9522082 folder to a blank floppy disk, which I did. The next step says to "insert the floppy disk into the floppy disk drive, and then restart the computer" Of course, when I do this, as it restarts it gives the "non-system disk" message so I never get to step 3, which says to "type:360100 at the A:\ prompt" I tried doing this after clicking start, run and typing this at the a:\ prompt (after inserting the disk, of course) I then get a message that says "A continuous RESET state has been entered. Choose 'close' to terminate the application" The choices are to 'close' or 'ignore'. My question is, should I choose 'ignore' and will this begin the flash process?? I know this is an old machine to be spending all this time trying to get going, but i am determined at this point...doing it for someone who can use it!! Thank you for any help you can give me! Mary Anne

What you need to do is make a bootdisk. first go to start/ all program/accesories/command prompt
type format a: /s and follow the commands onscreen and then make sure you have that other fileon your loppy and boot from that.

1801 microcode update

This error appears when:
1. The BIOS has failed and needs replaced or re-flashed.
2. The User has upgraded the machine with a core component or components that the BIOS is not coded for (not compatible with MB). A BIOS update may work in some cases (ie. Newer BIOS recognizes newer CPUs).

Gateway 505GR update bios to have NX?

Hi,

Do not upgrade to windows 8, with this computer.

If you wish to use windows 8, please purchase a newer computer.

You will only cause headache for yourself and other people by attempting to run windows 8 on this old computer.

Thank you.

Gateway 5300S Desktop PC - need original Gateway PC BIOS

in my past experience when you change drivers or bios, you should be able to unistall the new and restore the old. if you go to Gateway web site enter your model info or tag into search, it will provide the bios, drivers and software updates to your model. if you pick BIOS when your model info is displayed and download it, it should be the old one or original if no updates are listed. the links sent you may have answered this already. i have gateway pc so thats what i do.

Installed 1gig rdram computer wont turn on , only orange light... when i took out 512mb and put back the 256mb + 512mb(upgrade) it works.. but how do i install the other 512mb with out it not working......

Hi. It is recommended that you use a balanced memory total. Just like the wheels of the car. They all must be of the same capacity. But what you can try to swap the locations of where you put the cards in. If you still have problems then just use the 2 pieces of 512mb. Cheers!

My gateway desktop will not start. I am getting

Time for an upgrade my friend. Unfortunately sounds like your bios chip went bad. This happens sometimes and there is nothing you may have done. And unfortunately with a system that old you will be better off upgrading to a new computer.

BIOS update

1. Check your PC or motherboard manufacture for BIOS upgrade and upgrade BIOS firmware.
2. Try to start your PC in a safe mode by pressing F8 before windows starts. Then select a safe mode with or without network support.
3. If your computer starts in the safe mode, check if your hard drive is not full or close to full. If it is close to full you need to remove some data from your disk. Try to remove temporary files and clear your Recycle Bin. Restart your computer.
4. You might run low on your memory. If your PC doesn't have enough physical memory, windows is creating virtual memory by using space from your hard drive.
5. If neither solution works, try to run a "CHKDSK C: /R" from recovery console.

Good luck!!!

Computer Trouble

Most likely an IRQ conflict error between other hardware. Double check settings first, then try to reinstall drivers. This might help: http://www.helpwithpcs.com/upgrading/change-irq-settings.htm
