Re: Noisey Shredder

Have you oiled the blades? When was the last time it was serviced? There is an awful lot of paper shredds inside the unit. Motor bearings need lubrication. Gears need grease, etc. Put about a dozen drops of light oil directly down into the cutter left to right every half inch. I have used vegetable oil in a pinch.

The shredder is making a loud sounds and its stops midway while shredding.

Hi....I think I can help you with this. Since a particular model wasn't mentioned, I'm going to assume its a typical small office shredder. Shredders are generally not the quietest, but if it sounds more abnormal than usual, it's likely a hard or metallic item has gotten into the shredder blades and the shredder is struggling to overcome it. You can try to reverse the shredder and see if the shredder will back out the item. If that doesn't work, UNPLUG the unit and perform a visual inspection to locate the item and remove it.
The reason the shredder is stopping midway through, is likely due to excessive amounts of paper being fed into the machine at one time. This slows the shredder and overheats it. Your owner's manual will tell you the maximum amount of sheets that can be fed in at one time. Generally, it's about 5 sheets maximum. Trying to shred thick, un-opened letters/mail will also cause the machine to slow down and stop. If you have large amount of shredding to do, you might want to consider purchasing a more industrial type of shredder than your current one that will meet your needs.
I hope this has helped you.

Keeps stopping with overload light on. How can this be fixed

The most likely cause is that the shredded paper, has tightly wrapped itself in the blades. One possible cause is by shredding labels (like Avery Labels) or any paper which has adhesive on it. (Causes it to attach the cut pieces to between the cutters.) It reaches a point where there is so much bound up on the blades that even a single sheet of paper will cause an overload. The fix is simple to describe, but difficult to accomplish. You must go in and manually remove all of the paper bound up in the blades. It's not easy, I found that using a needle nose pliers worked best. Lot of digging and tugging (paper will pack between the blades very tightly). Sometimes a small, slotted screwdriver will aid in being able to pry out bits and pieces (it's not going to come out in anything but small chunks; at best). Don't forget to unplug your shredder before you start; those blades are sharp. This happened several times with my last shredder *Royal), but not once with my current shredder (Fellows). I tend to believe that the better quality shredders are worth the extra money. But any shredder will become a problem if you shred labels (like Avery) or paper products that has adhesive on it. (Another common mistake is shredding junk mail that has any kind of adhesive associated with it. Best to open and check first.) One other thing, ALL shredders need to be oiled on a regular basis. They make special oil for this, you can usually find small bottles of it at Wally World or the like. Best practice is to squirt some shredder oil in a serpentine pattern. over a piece of paper to be shredded and run it through. Do this whenever you empty the shredder bin. (Important for the life of your shredder.)

Why is the fellowes blade still rotating even when there is no paper?

It is possible that a small shred of paper is lodged at the sensor underneath the cutting blade.
    • 1 Unplug the paper shredder. Empty the shreds from the collection bin. Pull as much stuck material as possible from the top and bottom of the shredder blades with pliers or use canned air and blow the edges of the blades.
    • 2 Place the paper shredder back on the collection bin base and plug the shredder back in. Rock the shredding direction back and forth between forward and reverse.
    • 3 Make two passes across the cutting blades while drizzling synthetic shredder oil. Switch the direction to forward to run continuously for one minute.
    • 4 Lower two sheets of clean paper into the shredder. The paper removes excess oil, metal fragments and debris from the cutting blades. Blast the blades with compressed air when you notice a build-up of small paper scraps that may cause a jam.

Shredder does not pull paper in anymore, it makes noise, does not shred

Add some paper shredder oil. A shredder needs oil to function properly, oil should be applied every month or more depending on how often you shred. Learn more here:
