What makes a camshaft have play

the cam shaft is held in position by a set of thrust washers normally behind the sprocket or gear between the cam shaft bearing block and the sprocket or gear
end float or around .020 " is acceptable as it allows oil to lubricate that thrust washer but any more ( check specifications for cam shaft end float ) would not be acceptable as it tends to load up the links of the timing chain
if the cam is gear driven the excessive end float will alter valve timing

First gear on both sides would result in the easiest gear possible.
Lets think of it like this....

Left hand in the "1" gear, you now have gears 1-7 to use on the right hand side. The right hand controls the rear gears and brake.
Once you reach gear number 7 and want to find #8, move the left hand to gear number 2. Now set the right hand back to #1. This is your 8th gear.
You essentially have 3 sets of 7 gears, with each set being harder then the previous.
Clear?

2000 pontiac grand am 2.4l, no markings on the sprockets for the timing, what is the positions of sprockets to put in alignment?

You will need two small bolt's, that you thread through the hold's on the cam gear's, into the back housing, hope this was very helpful.

How to use thumb shifters on a 21 speed Schwinn Highplains bike

OK, for a beginner in the world of 18 speed bikes, put the chain on the big sprocket up front, it should be about 46 teeth, make sure it is center and doesn't make noise, if it does, adjust it just a hair either way, now, the rear, put the chain on the big sprocket in the rear, make sure the front didn't start making noise, if it did, adjust it again. You are now ready to take off, in low gear, as you start out, it is easy to pedal, soon you will be peddling air, shift into second gear in the rear only, don't touch the front. Just a little push with the thumb will make it shift, now were going faster, easy peddling, shift into 3rd, then 4th, etc, coming to a stop, down shift the back sprocket back into low gear (big sprocket) and be ready to take off again. Soon you will be shifting that thing like a Ferrari! The front sprocket, will be used for moderate terrain, wheelies, and mountain climbing, that will come later, learn how to shift the rear first. As each gear climaxes, hit the shifter, it will get smoother as you go, and keep the chain quiet, no climbing on the next sprocket or falling out of gear. Hope this helps.

I have changed my sprockets front and back on my 2002 sportster 883, and wondering if i can get around my speedo not being acurate now please?

The only way to do that is if you sprocket combination you changed to is offered as standard equipment on some Sportsters. For instance, if you changed from "domestic" gearing to "international" or "Australian" gearing, you may can purchase a speedometer that is calibrated for that gearing.

Or, you could convert to the older style front wheel drive type speedometer maybe. It depends on what parts are available. I have no idea as to what aftermarket parts are available for Sportsters. Try V-Twin manufacturing's website and see if they have anything.

It is difficult to change gear from high gear to low gear, it is not as easy as going to high gear. Model Kawasaki Fury 125 (2008)

I am assuming when you say changing from high gear to low gear you are talking about changing the chain drive gears if so yes it can be difficult because the rear wheel must be removed and also the front sprocket must be held stationary in order to unscrew the hold down nut, this is usually the hardest part of the job but not impossible. Don't forget that most people that change the sprockets to increase off the line torque usually change the sprocket in sets unless you want to shorten or lengthen the chain, sometimes this si neccessary other times the chain slack adjustment range will allow you to get away with not needing to lengthen the chain, this only applies to people who decide not to chain the sprockets as a set.
