Question about Canon Rebel XT / EOS 350D Digital Camera

Rebel xt; flash won't fire

The internal flash on my rebel XT will not pop up automatically, nor when I press the flash release button. If I open it manually, it still won't fire. Someone suggested that the 'microswitch' is depressed, but I don't know where it is or how to correct it if that is the problem.

Two tiny black plastic rods, one on each side under the flash. From the front the one on the left is much longer than the one on the right. Check with your finger if they are spring loaded and move freely. If either is stuck down that is you problem. You could try a TINY amount of Iso-Propyl alcohol on a cotton bud to clean them if stuck.
Please post if this helps you so others will know

Reble xt flash will not pop up why?

It depends on what setting your main top dial is set on? The flash will not pop up if you have your main dial set on P, Tv, Av, M, A-DEP . If you are using one of these setting you have to manually turn on the flash by pressing the small button on the side of the lens with a Flash icon next to it.
The only time the flash will automatically pop out is if you are using AUTO, Portrait, Close Up...etc. these icons would be underneath the Auto setting which are called Scene Mode, hope this helps ?

How does the release switch feel? If you don't feel the two separate 'pops' when you depress it then it probably needs to be replaced. Try pushing it all around - from the front, back, both sides, etc. and see if you can get the camera to release.

Set the menu so you can fire the camera without a card inserted and see if it will then fire. Also remove the lens and set the camera to 'M' and see if it will fire.

Check the CF pins for bent pins.

I have a cannon rebel xt and when the flash pops it it will no longer take a photo but works fine outside if flash is not needed?? Help

Does the little flash lightening bolt light up in the viewfinder to let you know the flash is fully charged? If it does, but when you push release it goes out and then comes on again in a few seconds that is the sign of a bad flash board.

Does the flash go all the way up?

Is the switch that is under the flash come all the way up (not stuck down)?

My flash isn't popping up automatically or manually, someone said something about a shoe problem, but I don't know what that is. Help?

The "shoe thing" people were referring to is the camera's hot-show. This is where powered attachments (usually a flash) is mounted on the camera. The metal plate on top of the camera is the hot-shoe. It should look something like this:
However, it is likely not an issue with the actual hot-shoe. It is most likely an issue of your camera's mechanical mechanism for releasing the flash being out of alignment. Try wiggling the "manual release" button for the flash to the left and right and see if it will catch on the mechanism. Then try pushing the button to see if the flash pops up.
You can try gently opening the flash manually with your finger, sometimes it is simply a buildup of dirt and grim blocking the mechanism and once this is cleared, it should work normally.
If you get the flash to pop up but it still will not fire, try the below method: Sometimes the camera can be confused into thinking that an external flash is attached to the body, thus making it ignore the internal flash. This can be resolved by moving the microswitch under the rails of your hot-shoe into the up position (it should be down when you see it) using a toothpick. You can access this after opening the flash up manual, as described in the previous paragraph. Here is an image showing where to find the switch:
Thank you for choosing! have a great day!

Pop up flash Pops up but does not flash

Sounds like the internal flash is broken. I have seen used cameras advertised with this condition so it is not uncommon.

Camera clicks and I get an 05 message on my canon rebel XT

Listen to the flash when you press the button. If you hear a click help the flash up and search here for how to clean the switches or the hinge. If you hear nothing the release is stuck and I don't know how you can open the flash.

I have a Canon Rebel XT and I am getting an error 05 message when taking pics indoors.

This sounds like the flash obstruction error - a fairly common issue with the Rebel XT. For some reason, the built in flash tends to get sticky if it's not used often. From what i've read, the best work around for this is to "exercise" the flash.

Basically what you do is when you press the flash button, either help it with your finger or thumbnail, close it again, re press the button, and keep doing it a few times. You'll find the flash gets less sticky.

You might also want to see if it gets caught on the Canaon nameplate as it tries to pop up. All it takes a smidge of friction to throw this error
