I also have a 320GB Elements ext HDD, bought less than 3 months ago.

Recently, it failed on me; seems like driver for the HDD has gone missing.

Please help. Thank you. (I used the HDD on both Windows Vista & XP.)

More info needed, what kind of PC and version of windows? It could be a bios limitation if you have an older PC. Memory incompatabilty can cause data loss and can be hard to pinpoint at 1st

Don't be so sure that the memory is compatible because the PC runs & seems normal, I ran an Abit nf7s for a week and then it started doing crazy things, I reinstalled OS and it went for about 10 days then crashed again. Changed brand of memory & never saw the problem again, but I won't use that brand memory ever again either, I was losing my mind trying to figure that one out.

You can recover data from portable hard drive with data recovery software.Tenorshare data recovery is one of the bests. It can recover data after deeply scanning your hard drive to look for lost data due to drives crash, physical damage, bad section, virus attack etc.Download it and scan your external hard drive for free to preview whether your files can be recovered. You can get it here: http://www.any-data-recovery.com/product/datarecoveryprofessional.htm After you recover your data, you can format it to check out whether it can be fixed.

I bought a Western Digital 640GB external hard drive about 6 weeks ago and installed it just fine. Have been using it (only used about 50GB) for 6 weeks with no problems. Today a notice appeared from Memeo...

This trial software expiration shouldn't prevent the external drive from working. The drive should be visible in "My Computer", Windows Explorer etc. A quick way to determine if the drive does have a problem, is plug it into another system- if it works there, then you have some sort of problem on the first machine- likely a software bug- or maybe some virus has fouled things up.

Computer suddenly not recognizing relatively new WD MyBook 640GB

Just a shot in the dark, but ..., shut down your computer and unplug the drive. Turn the hard drive off, then back on. Plug it back into the computer and restart. If it doesn't pop up, restart your computer this time with it plugged in.
Is there any noise coming from the drive? Is the green light on the front?
The same thing happened to me and the same drive, but 500gb. I did the above and it fired right back up again. You may have to delete the trial version from the drive if it on there, or from your computer if you had originally installed it.

Capactiy of external hardrive

That's normal. Storage manufacturers consider 1 GB at 1 billion bytes (1,000,000,000 bytes).

Computers, however, use base-2 arithmetic, and one kilobyte is 1024 bytes, one megabyte is 1024 kilobytes, and one gigabyte is 1024 megabytes. This all multiples to 1 gigabyte according to the computer is 1024^3 or 1,073,741,824 bytes.

Take 320,000,000,000 and divide it by 1,073,741,824 and you get 298.023223876953125, so your computer says your "320GB" drive is 298GB.

There's a standard for base-2 (binary) measurement terminology (gibibytes, mebibytes, kibibytes, etc), but few people seem to use it.
