My battery has been wearing down, and not lasting very long anymore, we get a message the battery is not recognized. Now the other day the critical battery warning came on, so we plugged in the ac adapter, but it was also not recognized, and finally it shut down. Now we can not power up at all. The adapters green light comes on, but nothing from the laptop.

the Dell AC adapter has a sensing pin so the bios can determine the wattage of the adapter. If the system cannot ID the adapter, the battery charger circuit is disabled. You'll need a functional DELL ac adapter to get the battery to charge
If your old battery was doing the same (not charging), then is is because the charger is not charging the battery. Do you have a friend with a Dell laptop? Maybe you can use a borrowed charger to test and see if it will charge the batteries. To answer your question , no Dell does not have anything built in to prevent you from using a 3rd party battery. If I could be of further assistance, let me know. If this helps or solves the issue, please rate it. Thanks, Joe
