It is a caps lock indicator lamp.
If you are using Linux, the flashing caps lock lamp may indicate a kernel panic situation, just like Blue Screen on Windows.
In what situation are you experiencing the flashing caps lock lamp? (just power up, POST, starting windows, within windows?)

DELL LATIDUDE D505 JUST FLASHES AND GOES OFF WHAT DO I DO

First how many flashes? How many beeps? Probably due to that line of latitudes, the motherboard has gone bad. Ive replaced many of those series main boards due to cheap junk they put out before fully testing them. But, you need to count the flashes and beeps to see for sure. IVe replaced dell latitude D620 main board more timez than i care to count due to trashy design. I imagine the D505 is in that same line of garbage. <;0)

Dell latitude D505 battery not charging

Take Dell latitude D505 battery out, plug in the charger and see if the laptop works.
If it works, the battery may be the problem.
Check the AC Adapter
Check to make sure the adapter is plugged securely into the wall outlet, connected firmly to the adapter box and to the back of your laptop.

Most AC adapters have a little light in them on that rectangular box in the middle of the cord that lights up when it's getting electricity.
If that light isn't on, try a different outlet.
Check your fuse or circuit breaker box and plug a different device into that outlet to make sure there is power to it.
If it still does not light up, your adapter could need replacing.
Also check the adapter box for signs of warmth, as it will generate heat when it's plugged in. No heat means no power.

Remove the Battery Sometimes it's as simple as a seated battery.
Remove the battery entirely and clean out any dust, lint or hair that may be clogging the connectors and preventing a proper connection.
Reseat the battery securely and make sure the little locking pins that hold your battery in place are securely fastened and there is no movement.
hope this helps

Where is cmos battery located in Dell d505?

It's called the Reserve Battery in a Dell Latitude D505.
(It's also called an RTC battery in others, {Real Time Clock battery}, and CMOS battery in older laptops)

1.Remove the AC adapter if plugged in. (Charger)

2.Remove the Battery.

3.Right up against the outside edge of the battery compartment, in the middle. you will see the battery latch.

Push it down. The Reserve Battery Cover will come loose at the top. Rotate the top, towards the inside of the battery compartment.
The Reserve Battery is right there.

Pull the Reserve Battery towards the battery compartment.
(Comes right out of the small rectangular compartment it is in)

(It looks like three round coins put side by side, and has a green plastic coating around it.

In actuality, there are coin sized watch batteries inside that green plastic cover)

You will see a Red wire, and a Black wire twisted together, that go to a small white connector. The connector is two piece. Separate the connector, and you can take the Reserve Battery out.

I Have Dell D505 LAPTOP and it just booted up

remove all drives, RAM, battery, cards and any external connections, and see if the Lock LED indication changes. If it does change, add 1 RAM module, and see if the system POSTs. If it posts, add items back till you ID the one preventing post and replace it. If no change, then replace the motherboard ($150 or so on EBay)

My Dell D505 powers up, but will not boot while the Caps Lock indicator flashes.

Try reseating the memory one stick at a time in each slot one at a time and make sure after each reseat of the memory you turn on the laptop to check for video. If you do this and you get no video then the motherboard is bad and would need to be replaced.
