Thank you, I have tried leaving it unplugged from the wall for a period of time, but it continues to do the same thing as before.

  • stephanie600 Dec 02, 2008

Is there any way to verify that the laser/motor went out so i can know whether this is fixable or I really need to buy a new one? I would like to avoid buying a new one if it is possible (our landfills are full of enough broken electronics!)

  • stephanie600 Dec 03, 2008

I have used a lens cleaner before and have already tried unplugging it. Still doesn't work. Any other ideas?

  • stephanie600 Dec 03, 2008

I opened it up and tried another DVD. It looks like its a problem with the laser. boo hoo... Thanks for the help!

Most likely it is a gonner. Have you done anything that may have caused this? Dropped it or something.

without a disk in it, try holding the power button down for about 5 seconds and see if it comes on or starts up differently. Some manufacturers set a clear and reboot sequence using the power button.

I think Pioneer does it, maybe yours as well.

when you turn it on, open the drive right away and see if it stays on. If the laser failed or doesnt lift, it should effect it staying on,

If none of this works, then its time to get a new one. Sorry dude.

Good luck

Hi and welcome to FixYa,

Your described condition of the Panasonic DVDS55 could indicate that:

  • hardware fault; or
  • firmware fault.
If it were a hardware fault, the unit will perform a self-diagnosis and display the probable area of the mechanical error and thereafter display that as HXX where XX wold be a combination of numbers.

This then would appear to be a firmware fault since the unit could not even complete its initialization stage. If you have performed the "reset" procedures as outline by marked, then the only option is to have the firmware re-flashed into the system by an authorized service center.

Just a start, do postback how things turned up or should you need additional information. Good luck and Thank you for using FixYa.

You could try cleaning the lens using a CD disc cleaner in the hope that it is just a dirty lens and the unit would re-initiate soon as it is able to read.

You should first open up the dvd player outer panel and see if when you try to play a disc whether it spins for one, and whether the laser moves. If the laser is moving, then try a dvd cleaner that can be purchased from a local retail store such as Radio Shack, Best Buy, Walmart, etc. Then let me know what happens and if anything changes

This can be power supply board issue and if you can take op its top cover then examine / observe main big capacitor in power supply board that could be leaky or you will see liquid near it.

Have you tried using different CD? Please try to unplug the power of the unit for about 5-10 minutes then plug it back in. It might just be a dirty lens. Try to use a Lens cleaner.

Dvd player wont eject

Unplug the DVD player and disconnect all other attachments, press and hold power for 2 minutes to remove all residual voltage in hopes of a microprocessor reset. If this works the DVD should work normally.

I own the LG DVD Recorder/Video Cassette Recorder (model LGXBR446). The problem I am encountering is, it plays some DVDs but on others I keep getting "Unknown disk, please, check disk again"...

Hello ethiosoft,

Welcome, and thank you for using FixYa!

I would start with a DVD cleaner kit for the player. Chances are, if the drive worked before, then it will again; after being cleaned.
If the issue persists, then the DVD drive is failing. Chances are at that point, it would be cheaper to replace the entire unit then just the DVD drive.

Have a great day!

I have a Digital Home Theater HT-DS400 Samsung. I have problems in reading a music CD or a DVD. You can read the message "Loading.." for a while and then stops and reads "NO DISC". ...

  • Make sure you have a non home made DVD. Some DVD players will not play DVD'S in certain formats.
  • If you have a normal DVD in the DVD player and are getting "NO Disk" then there is a real good possibility the lens is just so dirty that it is not recognizing your DVD at all. This happens a lot to all disk players that are neglected from the cleaning process. Get a disk player cleaner and run it through a few times until the disk is read again. Sometimes the lens is so dirty you have to try a few times just to get the cleaner disk itself to play just to do the actual cleaning. Make sure to run that cleaner disk through once a week. These disk cleaners "sweep" the lens and work well. You can get one at your local Best Buy for $8usd.
  • The last thing it could be is that somehow the lens has come out of alignment. Just a millimeter out of alignment is all it takes to not be able to read a disk and DVD players get bumped and knocked off the shelf easy. So this can happen often especially with the more smaller travel DVD player.

  • Hope this helps and thank you for using FixYa.

Regards, Tony

Technika tv/dvd combi dvd will not play when disc inserted it reads then indicats "no disc" and when attempting to play via start control on remote signal "err" appears

your player did not read multi disk or maybe the lens is not clean try to clean it with dvd disk cleaner first or check the disk for some scratches causing problem

After disc is loaded, it says "unknown disc."

Is it a pirated dvd? If it is, do you know some dvd players won't read pirated dvds? And if it isn't, then your dvd player may be dirty (the lens). For that you would have to buy a cleaning disk. You can get one at Radioshack. Or maybe what type of dvd type is it? Is it dvd-r, dvd-rw, or what? Some dvd players have trouble reading dvd-rw sometimes.

Hope this helps.

Wont play saying unknown disk

If the region setting is correct and won't even read a cleaning disc, there's not much you can do. Either the DVD drive or the Main board (aka MPEG board) is faulty and will have to get it repaired. I'm not sure about UK, but in Australia, Bush manufacturing warranty period for DVD players is 12 months.
