function keys esc-F8 will not respond to the FN+ task...
they will however work assigned regular function...(eg F5 will refresh
page just fine) Toshiba Satellite 5005-S504 PC Notebook I have tried every thing I can imagine to do short of giving the lappy flying lessons out the door!

thanks but I dont know how to even get into the bios to start... and
second I can hit the fn + f11 and that turns on my 10key number pad so
I assume the fn key is not disabled it is just the controls that go
along with the fn key that I cant seem to get to work eg...esc= mute or
f6 f7 brightness up and down or f1=lock, none of these work

upon turning on the power hit f8 and then select safe mode with networking. once windows is up go to start>all programs>accessories>sytem tools and select system restore on system restore select a date before you installed IE8.Let it process and you should be good to go.
It sounds like the hard drive is dying. I had a computer do the same thing and it turned out to be the hard drive. You should still be able to access the bios though. Try hittind either delete or F1 as soon as your toshiba screen appears.
