I have seen power supply problems on a lot of EMachines PC's. I don't know what type of problem you are having but could it be linked to the power supply.

It's either a dead power supply or a fried motherboard. Emachines are cheap junk, their power supplies and motherboards die all the time, just look around here on Fixya for proof. Instead of saving a buck, consider buying a better brand.

I have an emachine T2642 desktop and I need to replace the battery. Where is the location to replace the battery

A desktop machine does not have a battery, only a power supply. Unless you are talking about the motherboard battery which is located on the motherboard inside the desktop, but if that is the case I highly suggest having someone at a local shop swap out your battery. Making a mistake could ruin the motherboard.

Password protected or not, data is data and will take up space regardless.
It is a strange one. Did you say that the drive worked and can boot from in another system? If it did then this pc is having problems. Even if you view the drive with a different OS the data will still be there.
Very odd.

What are the hardware requirements for this motherboard in the way of memory, and graphics card? I have a pc2700 256M chip that is only seeing 191M of the total ram. Does it require ddr pc2100 instead? And...

Jeff, some of the system's ram memory is being borrowed. If you are using Integrated Graphics, this is where it is going.

[Integrated Graphics is also known as OnBoard Graphics.
On the motherBoard.

The GPU is soldered to the motherboard. (Hence you plug the monitor cable into the motherboard, via a VGA connector,

A dedicated graphics (adapter) card has it's own GPU.
(Graphics Processing Unit,

PC2100 is DDR Sdram that operates at a frequency rate of 266MHz.

PC2700 is DDR Sdram that operates at a frequency rate of 333MHz.

No, using PC2100 is going backwards, and will not help increase the Amount of ram memory, seen by the computer.

According to eMachines Support, the T2642 desktop computer's motherboard, uses an Intel 845GV motherboard chipset.

[Chipset, and Chip are slang terms for I.C.

The motherboard chipset used for the technology of the T2642 motherboard, is the Northbridge, and Southbridge chipset.

No power when i turn on the computer and everything is plugged in

Most likely it is a motherboard issue. I have seen a lot of these mobo issues in my shop recently. You can inspect the mobo yourself.
Failure of motherboards is usually due to breaking capacitors. A few years ago a capacitor company stole the "recipe" for making capacitors from another company and tried to make their own, unfortunately they did not get the ingredients right and the capacitors started breaking after 2-3 years of use. They sold these capacitors at very cheap prices and a lot of computer companies and power supply makers bought them. This is easy to diagnose. Look for capacitors (caps) (they look like little tiny soda cans) on your motherboard (mobo). They should be perfectly flat on top and not bulged or swelling or leaking anything. The dead giveaway is the fact that you are not getting a monitor signal and if you listen to your computer as it starts up, a few of the devices may not start (hard drive, etc). A failed video card will also give you "No signal message", but the computer should sound normal when starting up. Mobos are usually expensive to replace because the computer makers have them made especially for them and only order so many. They usually do not have a lot of extras laying around. There are a few companies that will repair broken capacitor issues. Hope this explains why they can fail. They (mobos) can also fail if overheated (like when a case cooling fan fails), the cpu is overclocked and not cooled down (which raises temps), the power supply fails or by lightning and power surges. Also if you add a bunch of extra components without upgrading the power supply you can suffer underpowered situations.

Old emachine T2642 will not boot...disk monitor LED stays on and CPU fan does not rotate...no boot access to CD-ROM, or disk drives...changed power supply...think it might be BIOS backup battery...

It sounds like a dead motherboard. Try removing the CMOS(BIOS) battery and replacing it. Then try removing and replacing the CPU as well. If you get the same result then you might be looking at replacing the motherboard.

Emachine t2642 power supply

Apparently this model has a bad motherboard, which manifests as a power warning and eventually a refusal to boot up. You can replace the power supply (as far as I know, any generic one 250-watt or better will work) but it's unlikely to help. You can buy a new motherboard (and new power supply, if you want to) direct from eMachines, but it's also likely to fail pretty soon. Your best bet is to get a new computer (NOT an eMachines one) and put your hard drive in as a slave so you can get your data off.

Emachines wont boot

Bad capacitor(s) on the motherboard can cause this problem, corrupted BIOS maybe... try flashing BIOS.
Probably the CPU if your not getting any error code beeps on startup.. NO Processor for the BIOS instructions thus no Beeps !
