When i press the ringer button on the side, or the # buttons 2 5 8 or 0 on my sph-a660 phone, the phone starts ringing or vibrating or just repeating any combination of those numbers and changing the ringer volume. all other buttons work, and phone can call out, just can't use those buttons without strange things happening. anyone know why?

Buy a different phone and read reviews on CNET where you would've seen this http://reviews.cnet.com/cell-phones/samsung-sph-a660-sprint/4505-6454_7-30732916.html?tag=mncol;lst
This was a base model when it was put into production and so Sprint never had any intent of investing in things like quality control as some of these phones work perfectly fine and other have tons of problem

VIBRATE STAYS ON

Follow the below instructions and you can remove the vibrate state. I have included a link to download the phone's manual as a PDF file.

Sound Settings
Ringer Types
Ringer types help you identify incoming calls and messages.
You can assign ringer types to individual Contacts entries,
types of calls, and types of messages.
Downloaded Ringers can be downloaded right to your
phone.
Preprogrammed Ringers include a variety of standard
ringer types and familiar music.
Vibrating Ringer alerts you to calls or messages without
disturbing others.
Selecting Ringer Types for Voice Calls
Your phone provides a variety of ringer options that allow you
to customize your ring and volume settings. These options
allow you to identify incoming calls by the ring.
To select a ringer type for voice calls:
1. Select Menu > Settings > Sounds > Ringer Type >

2. Select With Caller ID or No Caller ID.

The ringer doesn't ring, only vibrates. I select "settings" but there is not ringer volume level so I can hear the phone actually "ring', it only vibrates

First, make sure your Jitterbug is open and confirm it's on.

Next, Press the volume button on the outside of the phone below the Outside Display. Press the top of the button to increase the volume and the bottom of the button to decrease the volume.

There are several ringer options available to choose from. If you need additional help, you can call a customer service expert available 24 hours a day 7 days a week at 1-800-733-6632 and they will walk you step by step through the process.

How do i turn off silent mode? and how did it turn on to begin with

Ok, hold the * button and or # button. This will take it off silent mode, and the reason why it turned on is because someone had to hold the button. So try not to hold it.
