Question about Telescopes

1 Answer

Telescope broken hi. i recently started using my meade DS-2000 series telescope that i bought 4 years ago. it was working fine except that the motor would not move the telescope vertically. i took it apart to see if i could fix it like most of my toys that don't work, but it looks like some pieces that are supposed to be welded together aren't, and a plastic gear is loose on a metal piece meant to be welded to the part that hooks onto the telescope. i couldn't find a replacement part, on the internet, so if you have any suggestions, please let me know.

You will not find parts for these telescopes-- however Meade can repair them if you send them in.

Meade does not sell parts for their telescopes --

I have a DS-2000 Series Refracting telescope, it will automatically go up and down with the hand held computer, but will not move side to side.

You DID tighten the clutches-- and you do have fresh batteries in the scope?

Either the hand controller buttons are broken or you have some kind of damage inside the scope base-- or a blown circuit board on that motor.

Meade DS 2000 Goto Reflector scope. I am looking for the base goto motor assembly housing witch houses the motor and gears. Can anybody please help?

You cannot actually get parts for this scope other than from Meade directly-- and possibly a USED motor on Ebay. Usually Meade wants you to send in the scope for repair and will not sell you any gears or motors.

I purchased the telescope a week ago and it want power on when i put the batterys in it

If this is a new scope return it.

If you bought it used it is already broken.

Only a few things you can try-- borrow another hand controller and see if that works. and replace the hand controller cable. Beyond that the scope will need to be dis-assembled and probably a circuit board repaired.

Meade will repair the scope but you will need to send it to them.

Bought the scope about 4 years ago. Fairly light use and not used in last 12 months. Was checking it recently and replaced batteries etc. Horizontal motor movement is fine however no vertical motor...

Do a RESET on the hand controller. Re-enter Time, Date, and SITE, and CALIBRATE motors.

Also sometimes a bad hand controller cable will cause this. You can buy another cable directly from Meade. Call them here:

I took apart the vertical support arm and need to insure that I am putting it back together properly as it will not currently move vertically, horizontal is ok

Here is the manual-
http://www.meade.com/manuals/TelescopeManuals/Reflectors/DS2000%20manual.pdf

If the motor does not work it can indicate-

A broken wire inside

A broken altitude motor

A broken motor control circuit board

Only the first one listed above can be fixed by you. The scope must be returned to Meade for either motor or electronic repairs.

Motor unit fault DS 2000

Continual motor faults simple mean something is broken inside the telescope--- motors, or gears--- something is preventing the motor from turning the telescope.

Time to either take it back and get a replacement... or send it in for repairs.

Meade DS-2000 Manual Doesn't have info. about Meade Ds-2130

ds-2000 refers to the model line of the scope. ds-2130 the 130 refers to the diameter of the objective lens in mm. I have a ds-2114. Where the objective lens is 114 mm in diameter. as far as the manual goes everything else should be the same.
