Question about NetGear ProSafe GS108 8-Port Gigabit Ethernet Switch (GS108NAKIT)

1 Answer

Switching from Linksys 5 port switch to Netgear 8 Port Gigabit

We have 4 computers on our small buisiness network and one internet connection. System worked with Linksys 5 port switch. Swapped switches and cables and booted all computers. 2 computers work fine...autodetected everything. Other 2 computers do not work at all. Was able to connect to local area by manually inputing IP addresses, but could not get connection to the internet for either computer at all. 3 computer (2 work 1 not) are the exact same. Same drivers, same networking card (Intel Pro/1000 MT) all running xp. Other computer is vista laptop attempting to connect via cat 5 (this is the other that does not work).
Please help if you can...i'd appreciate it. Small buisiness and cant afford expensive tech assists, but we need to add another computer to keep up with workload.

Kindly check the Gateway used in the computer where internet is working.....

Move your primary Internet connection to port number 5. Although it is not mentioned in any of the documentation, Port 5 is the uplink port.

Hi I would like o hook up a netgear prosafe 8port gigabit switch to my pc and run an ethernet cable which is allready hardwired to my sony bluray player so I can enjoy netflix

It would be much easier to use a simpler device, namely any Netgear 10/100 wireless router.

Cable-modem (or DSL-modem) --> Router's WAN port

Router's LAN port #1 --> your desktop computer
Router's LAN port #2 --> your Sony player
Router's wireless adapter --> your iPod Touch's WiFi adapter

Since the cable-modem (or DSL-modem) is only delivering 5 to 25 Mbits/second to your router,
unless you are paying a _lot_ of money per month to your ISP,
there's no need to buy/use expensive "gigabit" equipment.

I can't connect to internet via my tv all the sudden . I streamed a movie on netflix just fine just yesterday . Today it won't connect . I checked allt he wires and connections to the computer and modem...

Here are a few things to try:
- Remove all the devices plugged into the netgear and leave only the TV and Internet connection
- Swap the cable for the TV Internet connection
- Try a different port on the netgear
- Monitor the activity lights on the netgear

Are you still able to connect to netfix via a computer?

Post any findings

Linksys SRW2008 blocking ports

blocking ports and QoS is a layer 3 function, switches are layer 2 unless you buy a layer two switch. You will need to do this on your router.

Won't allow connection to router

Since each of these devices is rated for 1000Mb/s, everything should be compatible. Make sure the NIC driver is up-to-date on your computer....and use automatic settings for speed and duplex wherever you have the option of setting it. The only other thing I can think of is to try a "crossover" cable between the router and switch...although this function is usually handled automatically in most modern interfaces.
