Question about HP Deskjet 6940 InkJet Printer

Dell Inspiron/HP 6940 stopped communicating

Printer worked fine for a couple of weeks (light use). Suddenly the computer can't recognize the printer. I changed the cable, uninstalled, reinstalled software twice. Orange "down arrow" on constantly now. Cartridges new, fine. No paper jams. What happened?

    No new or other devices or software installed post-installation of the printer. I did try the five-minute (actually 24-hour) removal of the power cable from the wall.Gotta be something else, I'm guessing. Thanks for the input.

    As it turns out, the printer has "had an incident" according to the person/company I bought it from. (Along with "What did you DO to it?" and other reasonably unhelpful comments). The printer has been sent back to HP and with the usual alacrity this purveyor exhibits, I may have a new replacement some time within two weeks ... (so much for buying local). (No, I have no clue as to what "had an incident" means...)

Have you removed the powe cable form the wall for 5 minutes?

Also check to see if another device has been installed or software recently that might have "overtaken" your printer.

How do i connect a laptop to the printer?


On your computer go to devices and printers. Make sure that it is selected as the default printer.
Right click on the printers icon . In the menu click on troubleshoot and follow any instructions.
Below is a link to the operators manual and installation manual.
If nothing works you may have to uninstall and the reinstall the printer.

Reboot the computer with the printer powered on (do not shut it off). Sometimes communication between the printer and computer gets disrupted - sometimes one or the other is turned off and vice versa. By rebooting, the communication should re-establish. If it fails after re-boot, check the device manager for the status of the printer driver.

  • Spooler : Automatically restarts the print spooler, which sends print jobs from the computer to the product, if it has been stopped.
  • Online status : Checks if the product has been paused or set to offline, and then sets the status back to online if necessary.
  • Device manager : Checks for problems in Device Manager that would prevent printing.
  • Print queue : Checks for and clears pending print jobs in the print queue (a log of print jobs waiting to print).

Computer says there is no communication with the printer


Couple of things to consider and try,,,have you tried another USB device in the computer, like a flash drive? If it can read the flash drive ok then the problem is not the USB port. Try using a different USB cable for the printer. Make sure your computer is up to date with the most current drivers. To me it sounds like a bad printer cable. Another thing to try is having the printer attached and when the error message comes up try wiggling the cable to see if communication is restored. If so then chances are that the printer cable is bad. Hope this helps.

HP Deskjet 6940 Connection Issues


i am not sure of the steps which you have follwed till now,

just try performing the steps below..:

click on start
click on run
type msconfig and click on OK
click on start up tab
uncheck the HP related options from the list...
also check the option " hide all microsoft services"
apply ok..

if the issue persists, write back..

Try This :

Delete the printer icon from the Printer and faxes folder; Disconnect the USB cable (If connected through USB);
Put in the driver disc; Goto my computer; Right click on the black HP logo click on Explore;
Click on UTIL(Folder)- click on CCC(Folder)- Click on Uninstallation L1 ;
Take out the CD restart the computer

Download the sofware from hp.com;

Select the OS;
Click on download
Save it to your Desktop
Run the software;
Click on Add a Device and reinstall the driver;

wolfhaus: Did you try creating another user account 'Administrator' or 'Standard' and see if it will print from that ?. Let me know if this helps or not.
