Question about PC Desktops

1 Answer

I am trying to install a sabrent SBT-F2A 2 port firewire IEEE 1394A PCMCIA Cardbus adapter. When I insert the card while laptop is running, the laptop freezes. When I boot the system with the card inserted, the laptop freezes. The install diskette does not appear to have drivers available for the 1394a adapter. The install diskette does have an install routine for ULEAD8, but it doesn't provide a serial number to complete the installation. Any suggestions? Don

I checked the sabrent website and didn't find it listed there. If the disk doesn't seem to have drivers for it then I would do one of 2 things
1. contact sabrent from their websites contact us www.sabrent.com
2. check places like driversguide.com and other driver storage sites for your drivers

DETAILS DONT SPECIFY WHERE TO CONNECT PRINTER- APEX AX3400G-U4802 computer

As this doesn't machine doesn't have a Parallel Port the only way to connect a Printer is via the USB.

If you've only got a printer with Parallel connection you need to get a Parallel to USB Adapter.

There are 2 types of Adapter depending on what type of connection your Printer has (examples at links below).

http://www.amazon.com/Sabrent-SBT-UPPC-Parallel-6-Foot-Printer/dp/B0007UVRVO/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1310762929&sr=8-1

These are just examples to show you the 2 types and cheaper options are available.

DO I REALLY NEED A FIREWIRE CARD?

If your camera is Firewire, iLink,or IEEE 1394, then you need Firewire support or a Firewire card.

If your camera has a USB symbol, or says USB anywhere in the manual, you can use USB for the functions it allows.

There is no USB to Firewire or Firewire to USB without the use of an advanced device.

How to connect IEEE 1394 (4 pin) to computer

IEEE 1394 is commonly referred to as Firewire. Your Dell doesn't support it. You will have to purchase a firewire adapter card and install it and its drivers into your computer.

Kernel Cardbus card (YENTA socket) problems

Dear

With many distributions with the later 2.4.x kernels (>2.4.15 I think), the PCMCIA cardbus services has been merged into the kernel with the YENTA socket. While this works with most laptops it also have problems with many others. Usually, the kernel messages will state that the card is detected correctly but then the ard will not respond to any ping messages in or out.
If your laptop does have this problem then you will need the older modular cardbus services through the PCMCIA-CS package. The information and source can be found at the Linux PCMCIA Information page. The solution for this is not for the faint of heart. It requires a recompilation of the kernel in order to disable the kernel PCMCIA implementation and install the PCMCIA-cs as a module. Again, the best source for Linux information such as kernel compilation can be found at the Linux Howtos. Also, Linux on Laptops provides many useful information on installing Linux on laptops
As of 2006/2007, the Yenta socket in the 2.6 series kernel is quite stable. It should now works properly with most if not all previously unsupported laptops.
Screen garbles after changing between X Windows and console
This is a relatively common problem with Linux on laptops. In the kernel call line in Grub or LILO, make sure that the vga=7xx line is included so that the kernel locks to a particular native LCD resolution. Some common vga= values for 16-bit color are:
800x600 vga=788
1024x768 vga=791
1280x1024 vga=794

Laptop keeps shutting off, battery is not on electric cord is connecting.. cord has a slight buzzing from the square is this normal..and i cannot use my usb ports

"Buzzing" from the brick generally means the fields are breaking down. This could also cause a problem to the main board.

Sometimes Radio Shack has the IGO Universal on sale, I paid $28.95 for mine with 8 different tips.

As far as the USB, the northbridge chipset should be updated, google the north bridge after installation and running

Also if the USB's bus is not operating, check the pcmcia card bus, if you install a wireless card or cardbus usb adapter and it hangs you have a motherboard chip issue.

How can I connect a wireless adapter to my toshiba portege 660 cdt as there is not a port on it for the usb to fit in to

Hi,

I am assuming that your wireless adapter is USB and that your Toshiba Portege 660 CDT has a PCMCIA slot. If yes then you would need something like a PCMCIA USB 2.0 Card adapter as shown here. The added advantage is that you would have an extra USB port. Just pls make sure that the PCMCIA USB 2.0 Card adapter you will purchase is compatible with your laptop and has drivers appropriate for your Operating System.

Alternately, you can try swapping your USB WiFi for a PCMCIA version similar to this. Again, pls make sure that the PCMCIA Wireless network card you will purchase is compatible with your laptop and has drivers appropriate for your Operating System.

Hope this be of initial help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information.

Good luck and kind regards.

Thank you for using FixYa.

Imstalling internal card reader

Well, installing an internal card reader without a spot on the motherboard, is a little hard to do. I would suggest buying an external card reader. They are a little cheaper, and a lot easier to setup and use, since they just connect to a USB port which all computers have.

Inserted pci IEEE 1394 card

You should have get a CD with your firewire card containing the drivers for it. Just insert it and run setup, or when it asks for the drivers when it boots up, point to the cd. An other option is to download the drivers from the manufacturer's website. You do not need to connect the port that is inside, it it there only in case you want a front panel port.
