Question about NetGear ProSafe GS748T 48-port Gigabit Smart Switch 48 x 10/100/1000Base-T LAN 4 x SFP (mini-GBIC) E... (GS748TNAFT)

My netgear switch GS748T gets hung and needs a restart or reboot very frequently.

    Lots have this same EXACT issue. Seems to be worse with v3 firmware We did not have the issue with v2 firmware but cant downgrade.

    Issue continus even on "refurbished" or waranty replaced units. We can make it afer 8 hours, with high traffic; almost like clockwork.

  1. Heat is a legitimate concern. Make sure all the cooling fans are working properly.
  2. Check for network loops. If your switch supports STP (Spanning Tree Protocol), try enabling it--and if it's already enabled, try disabling it! Not all implementations are bug-free.
  3. If all else fails, reset the switch to factory defaults and configure it from scratch. Configurations can become corrupted--especially if the device has undergone firmware changes.

also check for viruses on the network as they also jam the network communication

I have a gs724t and need to add a gs748t, what cable do I use to link them together??


Most switches are smart enough to detect and reverse logic if the wrong cable is used. If you want to be correct you would use a crossover cable.

Computer to computer, router, or extender (crossover)
Computer to switch or hub (straight through)
Switch/Hub to Switch/Hub (crossover)

Unable to detect my Netgear Gigabit smart switch GS748T via Smartwizard discovery. Earlier have tried reset the switch to factory default but to no avail. Pls help.


First, make sure your switch and PC are in the same broadcast domain/subnet, and that there is a DHCP server in operation.

Second, make sure you are following the "factory reset" procedure correctly (http://support.netgear.com/product/GS748Tv1).

Third, check your version of Smartwizard Discovery, and download a newer version if one is available. I think the latest version is 2.05.05 (download from http://support.netgear.com/product/GS724Tv2).

How do I reboot the computer?


Click on START -> Shutdown and scroll to restart option.

Will not connect to the internet


Your router may need to have the firmware updated, or it needs to be reset or unplugged for 10 seconds to reset it.
You can set up a home network and make sure all settings are set to automatic

Desktop restarts every few minutes

First I would try reinstalling the driver for the FA120. DOwnload it here: http://kbserver.netgear.com/release_notes/d100006.asp

If you still have the same problem, they have a nice page here which gives you some good steps to go thru: http://kbserver.netgear.com/kb_Web_files/N101250.asp

It *might* be spyware or virus activity... rebooting like that. I would suggest updating your virus and spyware definitions and scanning your computer also.

(Answering a six-year-old question...)

From the description--especially the part about having "spanning tree" disabled--the first thing that I would do is look for network loops. STP/RSTP ("spanning tree") detects these loops, and disables ports to prevent packet storms. If that is the problem, enabling STP should clear it up--but you also want to make sure you want those loops in the first place.
