No, you need to rewire the motor.
the heater elements may not let you do that, since it is rated for 480v.

Can i use a 4500 watt on a 208 volt system

Yes
Voltage and wattage printed is on end of each element
If element shows 240V 4500 watt, then element Wattage at 208V is reduced to 3375 watts and will heat 16+ gallons per hour
If element is rated 208 and 4500w, then element will operate at 4500 watt and heat 20 gallons per hour

I need a timer for a 208v water heater

Nope it is only rated for 120 volts
http://www.drillspot.com/products/43780/Intermatic_T1975_Indoor_Multi_Operation_Timer
You would need a Paragon timer that would be rated for 240 volts
kinda sorta like this defrost timer: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Commercial-Defrost-Timer-Paragon-8141-20-S814120-40-AMP-2-HP-208-240-Volts-60-Hz-/300933095423?pt=US_Replacement_Parts&hash=item4611029fff

Can my 240 volt compressor run on 208 volts?

Being an Authorized Service Center for a couple air compressor companies I can tell you I have replaced several 240 volt motors because they were run on 208 volts. Not knowing what model you have or what motor is on it, yes your compressor will run on 208 volts but it is very ******* the motor. At startup, all voltages have a dropoff then come back up to their rated voltage. The dropoff is determined by the original voltage and length and guage of lines getting the power from your transformer to the compressor With 208 volts it typically drops to around 190 volts at startup then comes back up to 205 to 208 volts while running. The motor needs the full 240 volts when it restarts and there is already pressure in the tank If the motor's not marked, call the manufacturer and see if it's rated for up to 240 volts or only for 240 volts.

I have an True t72f bought in late 2005 it as a nema 14-20p plug on the data plate it shows 115/208/230 volts?? how do i know what to hook this unit up to ??

If the plug has 4 poles on it, that means it should be connected to two lines of power, one neutral, and one earth ground. The unit probably has a 208-230 volt compressor, with 115 volt control and heater system. Let me know if you need more info

I am working with a Dayton 2YU39. The name plates states that it has to be powered by 208 volt system. There's a 3-phase panel and a single-phase panel. The 3-pahse panel L1 to ground is 118 volts. L2 is a...

Hi,
Here's what I think but you will have to check it out...
The fan motor in the 39 heater is a 120V fan there fore it cannot be hooked to the 240 which potentially could have the high (wild) leg as one of the fan legs...
The 240V 36 unit probably has a 240v fan motor....
Now if you were to make sure that the leg that fed the motor was a 120V to ground leg then you will be okay...
Hope you understand where I was going with this...

Wiring

Since it is a 30 amp heater you need to run #10 gauge wire and use a 2 pole 30 amp breaker, since it is 208/240 volts. I hope this helped you.

Electrical wiring for 120/208 service as opposed to 120/240 service

Your machine requires 208-240 volts to operate with each leg being about 120 volts. Move refrigerators are 120 volts so even though you have 20 amps you probably only have 120 volts.

You can go to the Bunn website (bunnomatic.com) click on Commercial then on Publications then Illustrated Parts and Service manuals and download the manual for your machine that shows how the wiring hooks up in the machine and the type of cord the machine requires to handle the voltage.

The plug you need must match the receptacle in the wall and there are numerous 220volt plugs and receptacles on the market. Don't get a dryer plug instead try for a twist lock as they are more reliable.
