Question about Projection Televisions

4 Answers

I have a Samsung DLP monitor (HL-P5063W) that was purchased in March of 2005 and has had no problems until now. It recently started turning itself off after the first 10-15 minutes. In the last week, it has been doing this repeatedly four or five times at startup. After that, it can run for hours and has no problems. No warning LED lights flash on in the front panel indicator area. The fan seems to be working fine, and the picture is still excellent. I've tried unplugging the monitor, waiting a few seconds, then plugging it back in and turning it on. (that's all Samsung could suggest when I called their customer service). Problem still occurs. I cannot afford to replace it right now, and I don't a means to take it to a service center. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. FYI - I've worked with computers for 30 years, so I could probably handle any part swaps if that would be the problem. Thanks.

Hi and welcome to FixYa,

Initially, would suggest an exploratory check of the inside of the unit. The description that "run for hours...no problems. No warning LED...fan seems to be working...picture is still excellent" most likely indicates no major components at fault and therefore for the moment could be:

  • loose connection;
  • cold solder;
  • heat related problem.
Offhand, best approach would be to:
  • reference a service manual;
  • observe/measure voltages of critical components on both running/turning off conditions;
  • cleaning. checking of ventilation pathways, fan efficiency and the likes.
In the even that simple fixes would not be corrective, you may have to review your options.

Good luck and Thank you for using FixYa. Happy Holidays.

First thing to look at is the color wheel this model uses--usually it will make a high pitched fan like sound but can make a grinding sound also.

If it slows down from the 12,000 or so RPM speed it will cause color issues.

HAVE GRINDING OR HIGH PITCHED SOUND?

you have the same problem I have. The problem is fixed by changing the new light bulb. The problem appears again after 1500 hours of use. You can keep buying new light bulbs or avoid it by not buying another Samsung TV.
