I recently bought a used compaq ipaq 3870 off ebay and it was not charging using the cradle, so I bought a new battery and installed it but it does not charge either. As soon as you remove it from the cradle it dies even with the new battery - what could be the problem and how do I fix it?
As I understand it, the basic cradle that comes with the Compaq Ipaq 3870 does not charge. If I were you, I'd either seek out a charging cradle or google the instructions for modifying your cradle to charge. Good luck...

http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Charger-For-HP-iPAQ-hx2100-hx2400-hx2490-hx2750-364401-001-367205-001-/360527673086?pt=AU_MobilePhoneAccessories&hash=item53f11fb6fe just charge up the battery externally and away you go I bought a second battery so I can have one on charge charging while I am using the one in the IPAQ so no down time
Try this - don't give up Leave it charging, even if it takes three days. I sold one a few years ago on ebay and the buyer was insistent it wouldn't charge. Eventually it did start charging and there were no more problems.
If you are saying it heats up the it sounds to me like the battery is not holding a charge anymore.
Try to remove the batter and place the pocket pc in its cradle and turn it on if it works then you can be sure it's the battery.
You can probably pick up a batery on Ebay real cheap. Or swing by your local BatteryPlus store and they can test the old battery and probably buy a new one in the store.
I hope this helps
Have a great day.
