Question about PC Desktops

1 Answer

I have a Maxtor One-Touch III 750GB External Drive that has worked well for over a year. This past weekend the icon disappeared from my desktop and I can't get it back. I'm running a MaxOS X 10.5.5 OS and have tried everything that the Maxtor Suport Center has for OnLine help, to no avail. I'm using a Firewire connection and also tried a regular USB connection; neither one will see the drive. I've tested the USB ports and they work ok. There is a small light on the left front of the drive, it blinks at a steady rate on the left side only. I'm sure that means something, but sure what. I've checked the power supply to the drive and its ok. I've tried the Maxtor One-Touch Manager software, but it does see the drive. I do have Windows XP on the Mac if there's a better chance to fix the drive under Windows than Mac. HELP!!!!

Mine will also occasionally disappear. i have had to do a restart of the pc which gets it back for my 160 gb firewire external.
the blinking light may be indicative of the hdd going bad, though.

My maxtor 750GB external drive is not recognized by my CPU anymore!

It's probably either WinXP and a hub fighting over drive IDs, special drivers you installed but haven't been upgrading, or the thing isn't powered up properly.  Go to.  Oh, and your CPU (Intel, ARM, AMD, whatever) never recognizes hard drives; it's up to the OS.  What OS?  That's how you present a problem properly, in the right category.

Have Macbook and 500gb maxtor basic external drive. It says compatable on box , icon shows on desktop but instructions say reformat thru disk utillity, but dont know how.

check the years the units were manufacture, if they were made a yr or 2 apart the unit might not be compatible. Give apple a call and make sure there unitis compatible with this drive, u may need a special device drive to communicate between the 2 devices

Purchased Maxtor ONE TOUCH III. when I had XP. Now that I have Vista, mAXTOR DOESN'T RECOGNIZE IT. iS THERE AN UP-DATE? nEED HELP. Thanks Marty xmartico@san.rr.com

Hey xmartico,

If your recent update from Windows XP to Windows Vista has been the only major change to your computer system since you could access your Maxtor One Touch III last, you may simply need to reinstall the Maxtor software to resolve the problem.

Information provided by the manufacturer has suggested that if no password was ever set, the hard drive should work with Vista immediately with no additional work required. If you had chosen a password however, you may need to reinstall the software and reboot every time you disconnect/shut down the external drive, or disable your user account control (UAC). Please keep in mind though that disabling UAC is strongly discouraged, as it may open your computer to attacks by various malware programs including viruses and spyware.

If you're still not quite sure how to proceed, I would strongly recommend contacting Maxtor directly for further assistance.

Hope this helps you out.

Sincerely,
Aaron

Had same problem. I shut down computer and restarted and Maxtor was installed and had desktop icon and everything worked then. I then backed up with no problems.

Maxtor one touch III 500g, got knocked over and now when its switched on it just beeps at me, and nothing appears to happen. I can't see any damage but it's certainly not working.

First things first;
hello
1) verify the connection
2) you have to change the Disk on another USB port 2.0
3) if you got warranty I suggest you change the device.** if apply.
good luck

Maxtor One Touch III

Download and run maxtor powermax, when you run the program it will idenify your hard drives, select your one touch and run the recertify, this will not erase anything but will run a complete diagnostic and attempt recovery of data to recertify as good. If the drive fails I have recovery software I can e-mail you.
