Limescale is mostly calcium or magnesium carbonate and will dissolve in acid. If you don't want to use the commercial limescale removers you could try soaking the element in vinegar, or lemon juice, or coca-cola and then rubbing at the residue with a plastics pan scourer. (Wrap the element in some cloth and keep basting the cloth with your chosen remedy for a few hours before trying the scourer.) If you can reduce the dishwasher temperature below 55C this will help a lot in the future.Hope this helps a bit!
I'm sure you know how this site works - everyone wants to be a guru and only Fixya! ratings are worth having. If my offering doesn't work for you, just forget the rating :-)

Mineral or scale build-up on heating element

Why not try CLR? It is much more aggressive on scale and lime.

You could just use it during a normal wash cycle so it will clear out all the ick inside the unit.

Bunn coffee brewer brews too slow?

lime builds up on the metal surfaces where the hot water cools down or evaporates, such as the sprayhead, the waterline to the sprayhead, the reservoir inlet, or the insides of the tank. the sprayhead and reservoir inlet buildup will restrict flow and extend brew time and may even not brew through all of the grounds. to fix:
1. remove the top of the brewer. the reservoir is right on top and the drain looks like a nut with a hole in it. lime will plug this up. using a deliming spring or even a philipshead screwdriver, push through and twist to get rid of the lime.
2. unscrew and remove the sprayhead and bore the lime out of the holes with a small flathead screwdriver or a paperclip.
3. if necessary, unscrew the reservoir drain nut, place it and the sprayhead in a cup of straight vinegar. for more stubborn lime, use CLR, but wash and rinse thoroughly.
4. if you have a deliming spring, push it through the outlet waterline to the sprayhead all the way past the 2 elbows and pull in and out, removing any lime buildup.
5. rinse parts, reassemble the reservoir, and brew a little without the sprayhead first to get rid of any loose lime. then put sprayhead on and run a test brew. if it brews short or too much, see tip for recallibrating

Adjusting the temperature

Our Bunn VPR was delivering luke warm coffee. The problem was lime scale buildup on the heating element. I recommend using a cleaner such as Brew Rite or a vinegar solution. If it still does not heat properly, unplug and remove the heating element for cleaning. This corrected our problem.
