Look, lower deck as low as it will go, look above deck, under the tractor and pull any pins holding deck to the control arms etc., and remove belt sufficiently to slide deck out from below tractor, I advise you to take pictures to make assy. easy.

SOURCE: toro self propelled mower will not move

This is a very simple solution, When you pull the lever it simply pushes a pulley into the belt to make it tight. Most of the time the belt has come off or maybe the cable broke. Turn the mower over and you will see the belt. My money is on the belt off.

SOURCE: Replacement blade position.

The blades have such a close tolerance tip to tip on a V belt deck that it makes no difference where they are positioned, On a 3 blade deck the center spindle is forward of the two outer spindles. So for that reason you still get a quality cut. Most all commercial units use a V belt and have a good quality cut.
Some john deere mowers have a timing belt with cogs like a car and their blades have to be in time
90 degrees perpindicular to each other and locked down and if you strike something then the timing will be off and your back working on your mower instead of cutting grass, and the belts are twice as expensive than a v belt.

How do you disconnect assembly deck from mower

Before you start doing anything around the deck area, remove the spark plug.
Depending on the model, it could be riveted or welded on. If you can't locate any bolts or screws it may not be able to be removed.

Mower deck removal for riding mower

You need to be a bit more specific. Please post the model number of the tractor and the deck. Things change and sometimes it can be from year to year. Only way to know how yours is attached is looking up the model number to know the year and see the parts diagram.

Mower deck clutch cable removal (model 917.28722). Detail provided in manual does not seem to match product. Need to remove this in order to remove deck and replace belt. Belt has squealed since new.

You should not need to remove the deck or the clutch cable just to change the belt.

  • ensure mower clutch lever is in the off position
  • lift the front of the tractor approx 24 or more inches.
  • lower the mower deck as far as it will go
  • locate & remove the cotter pin from the right (discharge) side mower lift arm where it attaches to the rear of the mower
  • release the lift arm from the mower deck to allow it to drop (it will hang from the other 3 points)
You should now have plenty of clearance to change the belt. Remove the belt from the engine pulley first and replace the new belt on the engine pulley last that will make it easier to change the belt.

If this is helpful please vote yes, Thank You!!

What is the easiest way to remove the deck to change mower belt.

Your listing doesn't specify the model number of your tractor. But I found a users manual for a 24HP model 917.28936 here and perhaps this is yours, or similar.
This model uses a single mower drive belt (some tractors use two separate ones) and you do have to remove the mower deck to replace the belt. The procedure is in the manual. Hope that helps.

Maintaining Riding Mowers Regular maintenance can reduce repairs. pagetools_04a.gif spacer.gif spacer.gif

Components of a typical riding lawn mower. (click to enlarge)

It's fun to ride around the yard on the mower, watching scrubby grass (and weeds) turn into trimmed lawn. However, when the grass looks as bad after you mow as it did before, or the mower doesn't want to start, riding mowers aren't as much fun. That's when it's time to put on your Fix-It Club hat and have some more fun.

A riding lawn mower is a gas-powered machine for cutting grass. The engine turns a rotating blade that cuts the top off the grass blades to a specified height. The operator sits atop the mower on a tractor-type seat with speed and height controls nearby. Riding mowers also can be used to pull small utility carts for other yard jobs.

To remove the mower deck:
  1. Make sure that the parking brake is locked.
  2. Place scrap lumber under the front and rear of the deck.
  3. Use the deck lever to lower the deck.
  4. Remove attachments from the deck.
  5. Remove the blade drive belt from the front pulley.
  6. Remove the front and rear deck fasteners, following instructions in your owner's manual.
  7. Use the deck lever to raise the deck.
  8. Remove the scrap lumber.
  9. Remove the deck from under the mower.
To adjust the drive belt:
  1. Remove the belt from the large idler pulley.
  2. Remove the belt from the adjustable idler pulley.
  3. Carefully remove the spring-loaded large idler pulley.
  4. Loosen the adjustable idler pulley and move it slightly toward the rear of the mower to tighten it[md]or move it toward the front to loosen it—and retighten the pulley.
  5. Replace the belt.
  6. Check belt tension and readjust as needed.

How do you remove the mower deck from a craftsman riding lawn mower

Most of these have a cable to pull deck into gear, which has a r clip to remove ,than two rods that go from font of deck towards front axle- remove 2 R clips to drop them, and 2 more at the back of deck, un hook belt around engine pulley, than slide deck out. See how this goes. Or you my have dune it by now.
