How high should the tension be? I have tried it at 1 all the way up to 10.

  • windowbox1 Dec 02, 2008

How do you detect if the timing is off, and if so what should be done? I am pretty machine savvy with my Bernina, but this one has me stumped.

The website recommended for the bernina repair manual takes me to a "Forum". This is not what I want. I would like a repair manual. Can you help?

This is one of those annoying problems that can take ages to sort out, there is a burr on the bobbin case or the hook where the thread is catching or the thread is not releasing from the bobbin case all the time which could mean the timing on the machine is slightly off.

Tighten up the tension on the top till it stops looping on the bottom
God Bless Greg
Tighten a little at a time till the loop is in the center of the material or as close as possible

Also check the flat tension screw on the bobbin case. put your bobbin in the case and pull on the thread and see if the tension feel about right. The tension on the bobbin case and the needle have got to be equal or as close as you can get it. If the tension feels too loose tighten the screw or take it out and bend that spring a little and put screw back in. then check tension again. Tension is the most important thing on the sewing machine to get the stitching right.

My Bernina Artista 185 has been looping the top thread on the underneath side. Is this a tension problem? No amount of adjustment seems to correct it. What can I do to correct the looping problem?

It is a tension problem. My advice is always to double check in the manual that you are threading correctly. With loops underneath, your tension is too loose, or the bobbin is not seated properly.

The cotton on my bernina 801 keeps jamming

Loops on bottom indicate a top thread tension problem.

Make sure needle is the correct size and not bent or broken
Make sure it is threaded properly with the lever UP.

Do a test stitch.

If it still loops below... tighten the top tension and do another test stitch... keep doing this until the stitch is balanced.

BTW... always grasp and hold both threads when starting a seam.

Why won't my Bernina Activa 140 sew the blind hem stitch?

Are you absolutley sure you're not getting a problem with stitch formation on, for example, wide zig-zag. Check again, using a different colour top and bottom and make sure that the stitch is being formed properly with only the top colour on top and bottom colour on the bottom. It sounds as though the bottom loop is not being picked-up by the hook properly. Make sure you've thoroughly cleaned-out any fluff under the stitch-plate and remove the hook/shuttle and give the hook race a good clean and give it a single drop of oil, even if you've got the lightweight part-plastic hook/shuttle fitted.

Just has annual service which included fixing stitches looping/bunching on bottom. Now stitches are wavy on the bottom.

Sounds like your service man hasn't properly set up the rotary hook retainer - take it back !!!

I own a Bernina 1260 and am having a problem adjusting my bottom thread (it has loops in it). I have tried adjusting the tension but I still cannot get a perfect bottom stitch.

Hello

You would pull out several long lengths of matching thread from my spool of thread and knot the threads together at one end (to hold them together). Grab the knotted end of threads with your left hand and place the threads(held taunt together) under the presserfoot of your sewing machine.

Select a narrow zigzag stitch that will zigzag over the threads, and holding both the knotted end(Left hand) and the other ends with right hand( holding tauntly), zigzag down the length of the threads.

You can use this for matching button loops, cording for belt loops, or whenever you need matching cord. The thickness of the cord will depend on how many strands of thread you want to use. You insert the loop of cord into the seam, so that when the garment is turned RIGHT SIDE OUT, the loop will be sticking out of the seam and you can put the button through the loop.

THANK YOU FOR VISITING FIXYA

The bottom thread on my Bernina 140 jams

Try pulling more thread out before you begin the seam - about 6". If you can hold the threads while you take the first few stitches that helps too.

Stitching too tight on top

I found a screw on the bobbin case (where you put the cotton for the underside stitching) which was very loose. I tightened it and that created more tension for the bottom thread which solved the problem.

Bernina 1008 - tension problems

Make sure the presser foot bar is UP before you thread the machine, otherwise the thread doesn't connect propertly with the tension discs. Top thread should reel-off in clockwise direction.

Thread tension problem when sewing on heavy fabrics

Sometimes when I need to use heavy thread for top stitching to reinforce a seam that has come undone, I will use the heavy thread on the top and regular thread on the bottom. I haven't tried it the other way around for hemming but I would think it would work. I do not currently have a Bernina.
