Magellan RM 700 issues broken antenna doesnt locate position

Hi I just bought a used MRM 700 from a guy for 250 bucks. it includes the receiver, mount, car adapter and a gillson external antenna. it does not include the original antenna, dvd and manuals per the guys. when i got the item, and tested it with the guy i bought, it had located my position. and after 3 corners that i am driving it just stuck off from the last position. i told myself probably it is just because i have not installed it throughly with the antenna position and stuffs. when i got home and lay it all and put it back in my car it did located my position and there goes the end of the day. the next day, it just stuck off again when im driving in my cousin's 49 miles away..(never used the gps on my trip since it cant locate the position). when i got into my cousin, it did get its position again but not after i got home. i say it does locate me because when i try to move the receiver in the east and west side it did change location in the receiver. trying to get the receiver fixed, i did investigate: i saw the wires on the antenna with the SMB adapter has damaged wire so i tried to fix it by cutting and make a new connection. probably i am not succesful. so i think either i get an SMB connector and fix it of buy a new antenna. i consider buying a new antenna instead thinking the gillson antenna is the problem. i need to wait a couple of days until it ships..(bought an antenna in ebay though) hope this solves the problem. i called a local circuit city to help me on this, and they say to bring it and they will check. i asked if they charges a fee for looking at it but they say no. just wanted to know specifics before the guys from circuit city tells me some sort of crap. my questions includes the following: 1. if in case the new antenna doesnt work, what options do i need to do. i am looking at that secret reset but scared due to not having the DVD to reformat the software. 2. does the MRM 700 would work without the antenna even the oem one??? 3. i saw the version of it as 5.14, as of now without any antenna, EL and AZ are zero. the only thing that changes is the column next to the EL to the right.. changes like 5000, 10000, -5000, -10000 etc.etc. 4. if i need to reset the gps, do i need any sort of software or DVD's to get it back???.. just scared of reformatting the whole HD without anything to recover with 5. is there anyone who can make me a copy of the software so that i have a back up for it... im located in Los Angeles. i will pay for shipping and stuff that needs to be. just looking for some good samaritan around. 6. if any of this wont work, i might just sell it to someone interested. sorry for the long talked. just a newbie with gps.. just pissed off with the guy i bought it since he said it is working which it did when he was there. but after that it doesnt. i called him and never answered the call. probably i was screwed but i dont want to think like that. i might just made the wrong mistake of buying it used. thanks. and by the way this site is fun and very helpful.

Since your GPS is not reading azimuth or elevation.. go to the secret menu like you said and select reset GPS user data.. You may want to go back to the "secret" menu and reset user data as well.. so you won't have any of his points of interest stored in YOUR GPS. So, Reset GPS user data and Reset User Data. This should clear up your asimuth/elevation problem and give you a fresh start. -Daniel

GPS turns on and goes to warning screen and freezes.

You can send your unit in to Magellangps.com or autonav2000.com to recover your MRM 700 unit.
This is a software issue that will require the unit to be reloaded.
Good luck

Magellan 700 sound problem

1. Search for the file ENG_F.SND sound on google or yahoo or any search engine.

2. Connect RM 700 to PC, and create folder name SOUND_EU on RM 700.

3. Copy the ENG_F.SND to SOUND_EU folder.

4. Disconnect RM 700 from PC.

5. Turn on RM 700, and go to Option, configuration, language, and choose English.

6. RM 700 will load sound file and turn off.

7. Turn on RM 700, if it keeps showing the initial screen, then connect the RM 700 to PC, and DELETE the ENG_F.SND from SOUND_EU. It should be OK after you disconnect RM 700 from PC and turn it on again.

GOOD LUCK!
NOTES: My screen indeed locked at first as covered in the last step, so expect that to happen. Don't worry if you never get to do step 5 and 6. Connecting the USB, deleting the SND file and restarting it works and the sound is back even without the file there.

This only fixes the Female voice along with the beeps and clicks. The unit goes silent again if you select the male voice but switching back to the female fixed that. I assume "_F" in the file name must mean female.

2 Magellan GPS roadmates that do not work.

I can fully identify with your problems. My Roadmate 700 was the third machine that I was supplied with - the first two failed and this third unit was a factory refurbished unit. What a rubbish organistaion Magellan is!!!!

I am now binning my Roadmate having just bought new maps and software but failed to get Magellan Tools or cameras as was promised. I am now buying a Tomtom Go series with maps and cameras preloaded plus live traffic info - it auto updates each time it's put on its cradle linked to PC/internet.

What a crass orgainisation Magellan is - RUBBISH!!!!
