Question about Refrigerators

Older Kenmore side by side, freezer warm....again!

We have a 1990 model Kenmore side by side, bought new. Last year, we had a frozen defrost drain line fixed due to the icemaker not filling, and the fridge being warm. Freezer has always worked. A Sears repairman "fixed" the problem (at a ridiculous cost, with no guarantee), but the icemaker NEVER again worked. We also replaced the seal. Now there is a "fuzzy" ice on the back wall of the freezer, and again, we are dealing with a warm fridge. I cleaned the ice buildup yesterday, but it is already starting back. Is this a failed defrost system, plugged defrost drain line, or what? Is it worth fixing this again, or should we shoot the dang thing. Never had any problems until last year. I really don't want a fridge for my Christmas gift....... Thanks.

With the age of this fridge, is it worth having a service guy come out? Sears will do the repair for $250.00, or just have someone come out to "look at it" for $65, then give us an estimate for repairing it. Who knows what that would cost! What would you do?

"Fuzzy Ice on the back wall" yep, this sounds like a defrost system problem. You say you cleaned this fuzzy ice but, the real ice is behind that wall. I would get it fixed but call several service people and get a price. My guess is that once the defrost system is working then the Ice maker will work. If the freezer is not getting cold enough then the Ice maker won't work.

Now, the drain can cause a problem too but this is an easy fix. Pull out the bottom drawer in the freezer, look in the back under the cooling coils and you should see the drain hole. Keep this area clear of Ice and any thing else. Some tubing with a little air pressure will usually clear any blockage. A little hot water down that drain won't hurt. The water should drain to the a plastic pan under the Ref. Take the front grate off at the bottom of the Ref, look in the pan to make sure it went through.

This should be checked often, once a month or so.

I'm not charging enough. I charge $30 for a service call in my area and to fix a defrost system would be around $80 - $125

I If it were mine, I would not pay that much.

Oh yes, Merry Christmas and enjoy your new Ref. I always check consumer reports to see what is the best buy.

Kenmore freezer won't reach freezing temperature

When the compressor gets worn it loses it's ability to cool. 18 years is a long time for a fridge. The last fridge that did this to me, I paid the appliance guy $20 to tell me it was broke (I knew that part). Then he told me it wasn't worth the money to repair it and to buy a new one. Time for a new fridge.

Kenmore refrigerator, model #60267990, serial # EJ5036206, water leaking from the freezer into the fridge on shelves into veggie bins, drain hole freezes up, defrosted it about 2 months ago, and has...

a plugged or frozen drain is a common problem that occurs from time to time in just about all refrigs. Folllow theses directions and it will probably not occur again for 2-3 years.

  • Unplug refrigerator
  • unload food from freezer
  • remove icemaker if present (there are 3 screws remove the one on the bottom and loosen the 2 on top of icemaker then lift it off the 2 screws unplug from wiring harness)
  • remove 2 screws holding rear cover in place
  • move cover to the side or remove from unit altogether
  • defrost any and all ice from bottom of freezer and aluminum drain pan that is now exposed
  • flush drain hole that you will see once ice is cleared with warm water. (sometimes I use a large syringe or turkey baster to forcefully flush hot water thru the drain tube)
  • reassemble in reverse order

Kenmore fridge not working, ice cubes wet, freezer frosting up

You may need a new defrost module. The coils ice up when it is not working. This makes the fridge and freezer only a little cold. About 150 to 250 bucks to fix if you call a service person. Under a hundred for the part.

Freezer is not cooling properly

Look inside the fresh food section behind and inside the control panel for a defrost timer and circuit board. Let me know when and what you find. Please unplug first, Thanks, Sea Breeze

Frozen vents from freezer to fridge

you most likely have a defrost problem.or a clogged drain.you need to check your defrost heater defrost timer and thermostat.if ice is formed over drain then you can unclog drain with hot water.you will see when it is unclogged, water will run down drain without running over into bottom of freezer.
